*Oh, and the whole game rhymes.*
*This multiple award-winning game was brought to life by Indie Developer Mattis Folkstad and his studio, Machineboy.*

**Hey Mattis! Tell us about yourself!**
Machineboy is just me, Mattis Folkestad, an indie developer based in Oslo, Norway. I started making games and animations in high school, and alongside my day job as a web developer I’ve made several smaller apps and games in my spare time. Milkmaid of the Milky Way was my dream project, and it took almost two years of late-night working to complete. Now I’ve just started a game company and will start working on my next game-- this time it’ll be my day job!
**Prior to designing games, were you a gamer?**
Since I first tried a Commodore 64 at a friend’s house I’ve loved computers and games. I was never a great gamer per se, but I loved trying out new games and having these wonderful experiences in front of the computer.
**What are your favorite games?**
My favourite games when I grew up were the games that had interesting worlds and told interesting, captivating stories. The Lucasarts adventure games were a gold mine of creativity and fun exploration, combined with awesome graphics and sound (for their time).

**You can definitely see the LucasArts influences here. There is a touch of the first two Monkey Island games, though the setting has the weirdness of The Dig. How did you come up with the story and setting for Milkmaid?**
I knew I wanted to make a retro-inspired adventure game, and since I come from Norway I wanted to use a Norwegian setting for the game. I’m also a fan of science fiction, so I decided to combine a rural fjord setting in the 1920’s with spaceships and futurism. It’s a pretty crazy combination, but it was so much fun crafting the story and game around these two very different worlds.
Halfway into the project I decided to make the whole game rhyme. It just gave the game a very special, story book feel that I felt I needed to pursue, and rewrote half of the game to make everything rhyme. It was a painful process, but I think it made the game more interesting!

**What sort of experience do you want your players to have?**
In Milkmaid of the Milky Way I want the player to experience the life of a farmgirl on a remote place, far away from everything and unsure of her future. Through courage, exploration and puzzle solving I want the player to feel empowered and moved, to feel that sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone to make things happen in your life.

**What is your favorite part of this game?**
My favourite part of the game is the beginning, where you’re exploring your surroundings and taking in the scenery of the fjords.

**What are your next plans?**
In 2019 I’ll be starting work on my next game, an- adventure game called Embraclet. It’s set in Northern Norway where I’m originally from-- a setting not seen in (m)any games so far!

**What programs or engines did you use to create this game?**
The game is made in Unity, which was great for developing it for both PC and mobile devices. I made all the graphics and music myself, using Aseprite, Clip Studio Paint and Logic for most tasks. Even if Milkmaid is a fairly short game, there -were a lot of graphics, cutscenes and music that had to be made.

**What made you want to post the game on Kartridge?**
Dealing with Kartridge has been a pleasure, and it’s great that gamers get a new platform with curated, good games presented in a stylish and intuitive way. I uploaded my game pretty early when Kartridge was in closed beta, and even back then everything was running smoothly. I hope the platform does well and that my next game also lands on Kartridge!
**Tell us something else interesting about yourself!**
In College I did my internship at Funcom, animating background characters for The Longest Journey-- a quite famous adventure game from the early 2000’s.

I can attest that this is a worthwhile game to purchase or use a token on (I did and have no regrets). If you know of and enjoyed the old Sierra games (King's Quest, Quest for Glory/Hero's Quest/Space Quest, etc) you will certainly enjoy this one. Big thanks to Mattis Folkstad and Machineboy for bringing it to us.
