*[Eburnean](https://www.kartridge.com/game/295475) went live with the Kartridge Open Beta and was one of the first games to get badges for our new platform. The developers, Lucas and Quentin Delvallet, have poured a lot of effort into this crazy, paint-splatter boss rush game. With 8 bosses to fight and 8 characters to master, the game has captured our hearts.*
*There are also puns, some of which are harder to survive than the boss fights.*

**Tell us about your development team. Are you an independent developer? Do you have a small crew of friends working together on your project?**
We are independent! We are French twin brothers, Lucas Delvallet and Quentin Delvallet, working on games on our free time. We do not have a team name yet. And since we are two, some of the questions will have two responses :)
**What is this game all about? **
Eburnean is about fighting weird bosses in a small arena and surviving barrages of bad puns.

**How long has your team been together/how long have you been developing games? **
We really started working on games together 3 years ago. Eburnean is our second game together. We've made other smaller games on our own for game jams.
*Lucas:* My very first game I made, alone, was 6 years ago, using Stencyl. It's available on Kongregate and it's not the best game out there, but it helped me learn how a game works from a technical point of view. It's a small platforming game that is near impossible to beat, well, some players liked it!
**Prior to designing games, were you a game enthusiast? What are your favorite games or influences?**
*Lucas:* I love most types of games. Some of my favorite ones are Jagged Alliance 2, Final Fantasy IV, Valkyrie Profile, Borderlands 2, N++, NieR, F-Zero GX... The list goes on, and on...
*Quentin:* There would be a lot to discuss about so I will just write a few words about my two favourite games. The game I love the most is the first NieR, an action-RPG packed with very shattering stories, characters and musics. This trio gives a new meaning to epic boss fights. The second game I love most is Jagged Alliance 2, this game has yet to find an opponent in terms of gameplay. I have still never played a Tactical-RPG that gives so many options and outcomes. And it is served in a big, credible world. Of course it's only the surface and I also love playing Zelda, Final Fantasy, Borderlands, Divinity and many, many others.
**How did you come up with the idea for your game?**
*Lucas:* Well, a lot of features available on Eburnean is just us trying and experimenting new things. So it's just started with a very little game about square that shoot small bullets then we iterated a lot. And Red Aleph was born! Red Aleph is Eburnean predecessor. It's basically the same spirit, an arena shooter where you have to vanquish enemies to go to the next wave. After that we took Red Aleph code and wanted to add more cool things. So here's the paint, the silly dialogs, the slow-motion, the different bosses... We had a lot of ideas at the start, but a lot more when working on the game. An idea brings another one, so we never know where the game is heading during development.
*Quentin*: At first we wanted to make a Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger than our first game (Red Aleph, that is the same kind of game as Eburnean). And in a second time, we totally did that. We kept only with bosses but this time it's faster, there's more bullets, more particles, a lot more puns and more... everything!

**Did you draw on inspiration from playing other titles? **
It's hard to say, one thing for sure, is that the excellent Furi made us want to make a boss rush type of game. We've played it during the development, so we can safely say Furi transformed Eburnean into a boss rush type of game.
**Was there a phrase, a concept or an idea that made you want to keep iterating to perfect the idea?**
Clearly, the painting mechanics.

For Red Aleph, Eburnean's predecessor, we had some particles on the floor that stayed to make the arena feel more like a real battleground. We wanted to use that and make this way better.

So here's the painting mechanic! Paint makes the game feel better, add more variety to visuals and it adds several mechanics to the game! You can charge your slow-motion gauge when you stand on paint of your color and the assassin's boss can even be detected when he runs on your paint.

**What sort of experience do you want your players to have?**
Pure fun! We just wanted people, when they beat the game, close the game or even ragequit the game and just think "This was cool".

**What is your favorite part of this game? **
*Lucas:* Did I mention the painting mechanic? Players can't see it, but I'm so proud of the code behind this ! We have managed to have this mecanic run very smoothly and that took so long to have something decent, but the result is worth it.
*Quentin:* What I like most everything works well together, the graphics, the music, the mood. Everything.

**What are your next plans? Do you want to release a DLC or an expansion?**
Eburnean already had a lot of updates that really have improved the game. Right now there's no plan on improving Eburnean. But maybe one day we'll make a direct or indirect sequel. We always have tons of ideas, so who knows!

**What sort of programming resources did you use?**
The current Eburnean is not the first version, thanks to some players’ feedback, we managed to make a more polished version of the game and added a few characters and 7 new stories. At the start it was the same story for all characters.
We made all the code and graphics ourselves. For the code, we have used Monogame using C#, since it's not a game engine, we had to build everything from ground. For the graphics, we primarily used Pyxel Edit and Gimp, this resulted in this magnificent "coder art". Musics and sounds effect that you can hear in Eburnean are all free of use and can be found on websites like opengameart.org and freesound.org.
**What made you want to post the game on Kartridge?**
Kongregate was one of our most beloved flash gaming portals when we were young, so naturally, when we heard of Kartridge, we've told ourselves, "Let's put Eburnean on Kartridge!".
How has the experience gone so far?
Great ! Kartridge's staff is kind with us and we've managed to put achievement and make Kartridge's API working fast, so everything is good !
**Did the upload process differ at all from other platforms? **
Not really, it's as simple as any proper indie specific platform. We do not have many comparison points, but the game pages are easy to build and with good results!
**Tell us something else interesting about yourself!**
We are not used to talk about ourselves, so there's nothing else really interesting to say. :)
**Could we ask some questions of your Sprites, then?**
Go ahead!

**Hello Sprites! What's your favorite color?**
Heliotrope: *The hero answered with his favorite color. He did like this specific color since he has young.*
Crimson: Well, since I'm a vampire that like blood. It will make perfect sense that I say olive green.
Mantis: Mantis (*_ *)
Tawny: Enemy's bruises! That's the best color!
**Which boss is your favorite to fight?**
Mantis: Mantis /(= _=)_
The Silver Telekinetic : Hands down, Heliotrope. I mean, he's not as excessively aggressive as the others.
Heliotrope: *The hero said that no fight should be your favorite one. He's only fighting to achieve world peace.*
Bolt: I like The Dude! Every time we start a game he says I could be his friend, it's awesome!
**Who is the best among all of you?**
The Sizzling Sun: I AM THE GREATEST! KNEEL!
Mantis: Mantis .('_ ')|
Tawny: I'm a fighter! The best one out there! Come on and fight me!
Gold: My my, this is a silly question, I own everything.
**Why did the chicken cross the road?**
Mantis: Mantis (? _?)>
Gold: The chicken was paid for that.
Heliotrope: * The hero thinks the chicken has a great destiny that is awaiting. Bue the hero will never know that the chicken is just a chicken that has no concept of road and was just searching for food.*
Azure: He was too far to be able to shoot the other side with his shotgun. Duh.
**Do you have any inspiring words for the players on Kartridge?**
Bolt: Come into the chat, everyone is lovely there! Be nice and you may find your next best friend there!
Crimson: I wish you to have a durable and succulent bloodline!
Eburnean: My game is great but there are a lot of great other games on Kartridge too, keep having fun!
Mantis: Mantis \(^ _^)/

*[Eburnean](https://www.kartridge.com/game/295475) is available as a Pay What You Want game on Kartridge! There are 4 badges worth a total of 235 XP, as well as more puns per minute than most modern theater productions. Aww heck yeah, this was one of the first Kartridge games I played! Great job to you and your brother!
From a developer standpoint, it looks like 645 accounts got at least the first badge. Since you released this as a PWYW game, can you share how many people actually bought the game for a non-zero price?

Thanks !
To answer your question, 8 people actually bought Eburnean. But I know some people bought Animal Daedal (My second Kartridge game) to support me for both games. So that's 13 people maximum. That's not a lot, but I'm okay with that.

I do not normally enjoy bullet-hell games (nor am I very good at them), but I did enjoy this one. It had a funny little story line, and the puns were good. The different colored paint throwing players (each with their own bonuses) was a good and intresting touch to the genre. I also liked that this game hog the resources on my computer. Plus, now that I know these devs enjoy games like FF, Zelda, and Valkyrie Profile, I feel like I need to support this developer more. Seriously though, this game is a good example of why it is important to be able to go back and add or increase the amount you paid for a game (especially if you selected zero when you paid what you wanted because you wanted to try it out first).
Anyway, check this game out. You won't be disapponited (and again, this is coming from someone who normally doesn't like these type of games).
