Hi All,
I enjoyed playing this game, just wanted to share things for newer players and maybe some others that are struggling.
I relaly liked the AI fights and when i frist started about 2 weeks ago, i thought if i could max my ai, i could max my income and be able to compete (i was not quite right...you get mroe income by having more money, ai lvl matters very little).
As long as your on online and doing ai battles you should bet getting good money (more than off line doing nothing).

The basic strategy I employed was just to protect my dps(frigates) with my tanks (fighters)
One main thing to understand is that if you are pushing the ai to high lvls, they will ALWAYS be more powerful than you... You have to kill most of their fleet before they get into range of you (hence why you use frigates with some sort of sensor (range) equipement.
What I finished with 1/9/20 to finish no.1:

i used square formations, slightly stacking the top right and sligthly ignoring the middle (that is how the ai pushes its waves out).
I was able to immedatily go to around 340 within the first hours of the weekly setup with this exact same formation layout.
This week I hit 400 using:

i started using wedge formations with 14 frigates in them only (more than 15 is 4 rows and the 4th row would be useless.
I add fighters where needed (if the enemy starts attacking my frigates whit no fighters, i can add a fighter to protect them longer.
Don't be afraid to move things or completely reset your entire formation (I would often do this if i got to creative and lost focus).
Good luck all and Thanks Dracariys, i enjoyed this idle game, looking forward to Starfleet 2!.
