I can't grow because I can't make money but I can't make money because I don't have enough people...?
Was there some kind of quiz we took to figure out the best way to earn a terrible rating?

Probably you have either too big army or not enough cities.

I have to keep a big army because I am constantly being attacked, thus I can't make enough money to make a govenor, thus I can't expand to another city, thus I can't have more people, and on and on...

Or surrender, reincarnate and try again with some godly powers.

You know that before governors you can basically ignore enemy attacks right? You just send your units and gold out just before an attack and then cancel after the attack. This technique also allows to gater bigger army before you finally decide to fight. Personally I do not like to produce any units before I build Colossus (+10 gold) . This is little annoying but it is very helpful if you start with enemy withing very close range. Also if you are very annoed by the starting situation you can, as suggested, restart or change difficulty in options then change it back after building colossus/governors.

basically you need a single troop so AI won't declare war if you already won the wonder race...
They could still declare war but is pretty uncommon
