I really liked this game until this last patch. All the new stuff to build and research is great, but the AI is awful. It seems peace is never an option. The only choice I've found productive is war. Kill everyone. No matter how well we get along now, they will always stab you in the back. I also learned that my primary army could be off, capturing a barbarian city, my capital could be attacked, taken over, and my army is just gone. They don't get back an easily win the city back. They just get back and decide, fuck it, and disband. So if there are any countries starting close to your capital. You cannot be friends. The AI will not allow it. You must kill them.
I've reset this run 6 times now, sure I was just off at the start. I can never leave it now. If I'm not constantly monitoring the game, the AI will betray and cut your empire to shreds the moment you go to the kitchen for a snack.
It's fine. I'll figure it out, but the ratio of idle to active given the amount of time things take... is off for me now. Paths other than warmonger, need work.

It's clear you lack the knowledge to fight a more difficult AI; you better switch to peace/relax until you learn new mechanics.
Sending all army on attack and letting city/capital undefended is a beginner mistake. Especially on hardcore.
You can always pause the game so you can "go to the kitchen for a snack"
The ratio of idle/active is constantly improved, but also depends on difficulty you pick. On hardcore you have to micro everything, especially with some gods, on peace you can sleep in front of your pc for hours and nothing bad will happen.
As a reminder you can ALWAYS change the difficulty from settings, a function I personally hope to get ridden off soon since lot of people abuse it to dominate world from peace then switch to hardcore for more peace gains.
It's funny how some people complains the AI is too weak and stupid while others still have to figure out that you can select another difficulty.

i actually think the difficulty curve is spot on - ive made enough leanring mistakes where ive put a city i own into riot and then have to retkake it
i really freaking love this adaptaiton of a game i put many all nighters into.
i havn't played above relaxed difficulty as yet, ill give normal a try in a few more reincarnations.
balancing an army can be damn tough :)
