For tournaments you'd want to get maximum amount of gold to pass as many waves as possible. For that purpose skipping waves is not good. I did some measurements. Passing 50 waves without skipping takes 5 minutes 14 seconds with +165% game speed increase (314 seconds). My current wave record is around 1300. 1300 waves has 26 periods of 50 waves. It takes 8164 seconds to reach wave 1300 without skipping. That's around 2 hours 16 minutes and it's only going to get longer the farther I progress. That's a lot of time letting the game sit on backround.
Tournament mode is thus failure. Pass 1 wave to qualify for rewards and then do something else. Excessive time spent is not worth small possible increase in rewards.

If you want to maximize your gold & levels during a tournament, you shouldn't just let the game sit in the background. You need to check it every little while for AP bonuses and summon drone swarm and/or cargo carriers.
If you summon a drone swarm then cast Mastership, Prosper and Essence Storm, plus either Strength Aura or Frenzy Aura, you make a ton of Gold and XP, and you earn a handful of extra Essences. The same applies to cargo carrier, but only cast the spells if you're pretty sure you'll kill it that round.
