I've been dropping by every now and then just to spend particles, so it's working fine for me.
Do you also have auto-trancend active? That will reset mythos shards, so if the times work out so that you reincarnate shortly after a trancend you would end up gaining negligible particles. Tweak the times so that the reincarnate has a decent amount of build-up.
