I *think* it adds to the upgradable ant bonus levels. I know I have more bonus levels than I can account for with research and the +2 from the talisman. It seems each level of Mortuus Est Formicidae adds an additional bonus level to all ants, and bonus levels count toward this as well. So if you have a level 3 Mortuus Est, you add +2 for the talisman, +3 for the ant level, and +3 for bonus levels, which gives you +8 bonus levels on top of any you already researched.
Besides, your crumbs get reset anyway, no loss spending them on the ant.
I'm interested in seeing if anyone can confirm this. I can't recall seeing this effect documented anywhere.

At the very least its level doesn't reset and it does contribute to ant ELO and thus sacrifice rewards, so it's always worth it.

You're forgetting challenge 9. My bonus levels add up exactly without assuming any from Mortuus Est Formicidae.

You are correct, I did forget challenge 9! There are a lot of things affecting other things in this game, sometimes it's easy to lose track. It was just coincidence that my challenge 9 completions and my ant 12 levels were the same.
