Zaixionito: If monsters need to walk too far around a wall they will just attack the wall and quickly get through. I find that walls aren’t very effective in stopping attacks, they’re mainly effective in directing attacks so they’re nearer to where your towers are. They only redirect the attacks if the walk distance is short enough compared to the strength of the wall.
Also keep area of effect towers within defending range of the other towers. The non area of effect towers can be killed too easily with a swarm of pokies if you don’t have a cannon tower or laser tower defending them.
Also as Makattacker Kyord said, don’t try to defend everything strongly. Defend your Townhall because it takes so long to rebuild. Defend your resource silos, because attackers profit from those. Next priority in my opinion is your towers (if you lose those everything else falls). Followed by resource harvesters again to stop enemies profiteering.
Also with building positioning, layer your base like an onion. Use buildings of lesser importance as buffers that attacking waves will end up being stopped by. Make sure that your long range towers are in range to thin out the numbers of attackers while they attack your outer layers.

now, what is the distance monsters accept to move along a wall instead of breaking through, anyway?

It depends on the strength of the wall, which can be upgraded. Wood is the weakest, and thus requires the most openings if you want them to walk around to a choke point. Gold is the strongest, and thus most likely to be fine with just one or two openings for a large area of protection. However, don’t let the upgrade times fool you into thinking that they will all be cheap and easy upgrades. My first level 3 block nearly drained my resources because my harvesters and silos are an extremely low level compared to their current limit, giving me only a handful of resources that I can use at any time, and an extremely slow recharge rate.

I can only guess on that. My guess is 6 squares for wooden, 11 squares for stone, 16 squares for metal, 21 squares for gold.
That’s distance the monsters walks, not how many squares the wall is.
If the closest target is completely blocked (as in there’s no way to walk to the closest target) it will eat through the wall regardless.

This is my base. It probably stinks, but that just means more things to fix : )
EDIT: Sorry, but I couldn’t get it to go into the forum : (
FYI: I’m on a mac, so don’t be hatin’

town hall should be in middle
silo next to hatchery unprotected.
Catapultable so put harvesters or silos near one of the towers so they would lose the resources.

I think it’s pretty good.
Tell me any flaws you think might be there.
P.S. Sorry for Graphics & paint on resources, shiny, & level.
P.S.S. I recently switched the upgrading pebble shiners(bottom) with the goo factories(right).

Don’t make one big wall around your base, monsters will just eat through.
Spread out your traps.
Spread out your towers, but don’t keep them too far from one another
More defence around your Townhall and silos.

No tower is very good by itself, especially weaker towers like cannons and snipers. My advice would be to surround your town hall with towers and surround those towers with resource gatherers. Another way to go about it would be to put all your towers in a block and place that block in between your harvesters and your town hall so they cover both. Either way, spreading anything too thin is a bad idea. If you don’t believe me, think of a dam. A thin dam crumbles at the slightest touch but a thick dam with overlapping layers can handle many buffets and excessive pressures with ease.
>
> Jimbo, that’s some really good advice(although i already condensed when my noob protection ran out). But, there are a few things you forgot to say. You forgot to tell DragonArcherZ that he should use the Misc. towers to block pathways to his towers and silos. This is because most people don’t use looters, as their damage sucks. So they will be deterred and waste a lot of time smacking buildings that will not benefit them in any way, while they get potshotted by towers. (i believe Monster Locker, Housings, HCC, and hatcheries have very high health) That’s also directed at you, because your Misc towers are in a clump. This is bad. You should use them to protect pathways.
>
> Also, you forgot to tell him that his Snipers should be on the inside, where they cannot be touched and can safely potshot enemy monsters.
>
> Im not trying to insult your thinking, just giving some insight to people who did not know.
That was my old base. My new base has a lot better coverage.

Check bottom of page 3. In fact, that’s outdated, although the design is only changed slightly. I now have a tesla, and a monster bunker with a load of banditos. My resource silos have enough capacity to get a laser soon as well.
I’ll take a screenshot soon.
Oh and then, I didn’t give too much about layout. I still had a few days of noob protection.
EDIT: I can’t believe this got stickied! Yay. I love it when I make a helpful thread and it gets stickied, like my TDP4 Strategy Guide I made last year.

Dude, Hedgie, what he means is that you know the left side? People can fling from outside the square. So your towers are useless until it’s too late.

My yard is pretty much perfect and can’t really be improved on. I’ll post it here so others may learn.

i think useless buildings should be outside of your wall. ie hatcherys, yard planner, or monster baiter. use them as a bait to lure monsters to a certain opening or choke point instead of trying to protect them. or use them to separate monsters

towers are a bdb
harvesters unprotected. random walls making things o.0
booby traps in 1 spot..
silos not very protected

omg thats to pretty looking XD but there’s no defense organization there saddly. you cenered the down center nicely at least. go pick up those shrooms x3 all but one at least, or all if they get in the way. your silos and town hall should be the most protected, then the towers and harvesters themselves. then what someone else said, the other stuff would just be delayers for attacks.
**edit:** i have so much envy on how you made pictures there XD try making them face the screen instead of towards the non-isometric bottom. it’s a nice challenge to make works “sideways” according to the yard planner hehehe.
