I am running a linux pc with a Chromium. I have also lost the save, but I was able to recover it by the following process:
1) Sign out of Chrome
2) Close Chrome
3) Open Chrome and open BTD 5
4) Login in to Chrome
5) Reload Page
I don't know if it will work on a Mac or Windows but I think it worth trying.
