so i was reading up on the wiki and i realized i should have been saving some GP instead of spending it all. (whoops) 10% is the recommended amount. now how in the hell do i find my total GP? is it the number in parenthesis next to GP an hour in the rebirth tab? it says 10708 but that seems really high to me. if that is the case i have a lot of GP to put in the bank still...

From other->statistics->general it's possible to reset that GP/hour tracker. (If you want to. Like if you're curious to see how you'll do over the course of a particular month, or something.) Sounds like you've never done that before, so it's currently showing the same as your all-time GP/hour tracker. (Side note: The number in parentheses next to the tracker is of course counting all earnings while the line in statistics that bladetorment directed you to is specifically counting what you've spent. You weren't seeing much difference there since you've spent all your earnings but there will be a difference once you start maintaining a bank of unspent GP.)
But yeah, once you really get into the game and really get going that GP piles up a bit more than you might expect.
At least maintaining a bank of unspent GP for a bonus is a lot more hands-off now than it used to be, though. All you have to do is set a target in that "keep minimum god power" field on the GP page and it won't let you spend yourself below that line, and you've got the sliders always automatically allocating percentages of your unspent GP into the bonuses. It used to be that the sliders were set to specific numbers of GP, there was nothing to automatically allocate them when you obtained more, and there was nothing preventing you from spending away the GP you were using in the bonuses.
Of course, the "10% of total spent" thing is just a rough guideline. Something fairly easy that you can deal with quickly. I forget the numbers but there was some more specific advice out there about it taking a certain amount of bonus physical (or bonus battle, whichever has the larger impact on your power level (remember that the common advice is to just split the bank between two bonuses: one for attack (physical or battle) and one for defense (mystic))) just to be able to defeat one extra god in a run compared to what would be possible without the GP bank and then since the next god after that is the same multiple stronger than that one it requires a much larger bonus to be able to push past that one as well. I think it was something like 10k% bonus (amount that shows in parentheses next to the % you set with the slider) to be capable of pushing one extra god / 1M% bonus to be capable of pushing two extra gods / 100M% for three gods / etc.? (Because (ignoring the UBC bonus) each next P.Baal is 100 times stronger than the one before it. I think?) Technically, tying up some of your GP in these bonuses may not be accomplishing much anyway if it's not pushing you to that next important milestone in the bonus. (It might not be hurting anything either to have a bit more than is really necessary banked, though.)
If you've spent almost 11k GP so far the 10% guideline would suggest a bank of 1100 unspent GP. With a 50/50 split between physical and mystic that's 550 GP powering each of those bonuses. You might also need to have built up something like 18k CP (ignoring GSC bonus) or 9k CP (if GSCs are complete) to boost that 550 GP to a 10k% bonus, unless I'm messing up my math here.
