I am still stuck with what would be an optimum hero to build a decent defensive deck with! The concept is hard for me, for some reason..Im thinking walls, shields, high health cards but I could be wrong? Im also thinking Sidalis maybe a good hero or Laeteras..maybe another hero even again?! Any comments or help would be SO appreciated and useful to me!
Thanks for allowing me the [post andI hope to get some interesting input!

There's a good hero deck guide, but not defensive. Here: https://www.kongregate.com/forums/32949-storm-wars/topics/647066-deck-building-guide

Thank you! It helped a little, but you are right..it doesnt really gointo what makes a defensive deck or the heros it takes to make it work. A good deck guide however, and thanks again..

Sure wish there was more informati0on on the game and deck building, especially the defensive decks; as it is now, its such a narrow window for information it can leave you frustrated and very unsettled about the game.

The game FAQ here on Kongregate isn't a bad place to start, but for specific other questions you should try just asking players in chat, whether Kongregate chat or global chat. Many are friendly and quite experienced. You could also join the Discord channel which we are setting up: https://tinyurl.com/StormWarsChat ... I expect that channel to become more active in the near future, but there are already people on there willing to chat pretty reliably at most times.
Hope this helps,

There is no optimum hero; that's why we see the diversity of defense heros that we do. But there are clearly some that are preferred over others.
Preferred defensive heros are those with general or widely applicable abilities. Luther, Hylok, and Bellatrix are all examples of heros with skills that are general purpose. Regardless of who is attacking, Hylok's remedy and prisim beam will be pretty helpful. In contrast, Aubern's sandstorm is great against fast creatures but terrible against big, slow ones. If I was attacking Aubern, I would pick a deck full of big creatures that can steamroll whatever she puts out.
It's also important to pick heroes that aren't one-trick ponies. Saphi was really cool when it came out. But almost all Saphi decks are the same, so once you learn how to beat them (answer: use Clom), then you'll always win against Saphi, making Saphi a bad defense hero. This evolves as you get higher up the ranks. Clom is a great defensive hero early in the game, but very few top players use Clom as defensive; Clom's weaknesses are too apparent and too easily defeated by people with access to a decent number of cards.
As for the cards, don't think about "defending" but about having a powerful general purpose deck. For a defense deck, my preference is aggro. Control decks are too hard to design to be general purpose. Stall decks are good, but someone could use a potion on you and see how it works and pick a counter that defeats you (but, how many people use potions in the arena?). In terms of aggro, it's all about designing a *good* deck rather than a *defensive* deck. Simply create the best general purpose deck you can and set that as your defense.

I forgot an important topic: equipment.
The first step is to recognize which heroes are general purpose and which are specific. But how do you pick which one to play? The answer is equipment. Look at your best equipment and try to figure out which equipment goes well with which heroes. For example, armor is great on a hero that has a lot of life because it’ll take _much_ longer to bring them to zero. A hero with only a little bit of life won’t gain much. A hero with only a little life needs speed; they’re fragile so they need to get their deck going fast. Certain equips naturally go with certain heroes; Dryad Thorns (+1 attack to all elementals) naturally should only be used with Amariel. Finally, summing equips (spawn a creature every X turns) tend to be useful for most decks. Their general-purpose means that they’re great for defensive decks. Unquestionably though, the deck that benefits the most from them is Dulluk. After you’ve thought about hero+equipment, then think about what cards go well with that combo.
The final step is to play test. Fight in the endless dungeon and especially the coliseum. You’ll start seeing the gaps there. Is your deck weak against creatures with big attack? Maybe switch an equip to a Seeking Axe or even switch the hero to Otuk. Getting clobbered by Dulluk? Throw in more spells and maybe a summoning equip. Your deck will never beat all other decks, but once you’ve honed a general-purpose deck, you’ll have a solid defense.

I think one more thing to note, is that because of the huge advantage attackers get (they get to choose their deck to counter your hero(or even your deck if they potion)), you shouldn't be expecting to get a high win rate on defense. It varies hugely depending on where you are in rank, but i've heard it said that if you can consistently get a 30% defense winrate (i.e. 3 wins per 10 fights), you're doing really well.

Oh, thats very good to know killer! I would have tried n tried to get an over 50% defensive deck, but what you said does make sense and its correct! Thansk, nowI wont have to think I suck at defense :)

haha, all goods.
note the bit about it depending on rank btw
generally, expect your defense winrate to be lower the higher rank you are, as you get targeted more by people who know what they are doing and have better dedicated counters.
That being said, mine is currently 100% because I'm doing challenges and my rank has fallen through the floor XD
when I'm up at what i can get to when i really try, it's more like 10-20% because I haven't tried very hard with my defense deck.
Also, it can also vary based on where we are at in the week. at the beginning of the week, all the high ranked players get their crowns reset and will be much closer in crowns to the lower ranked players, so will be given them as targets. then as the week goes on, many of them tend to separate further away again, and just fight amongst themselves up there.
