Thanks to the calculators, I can understand the impact of engines on win/loss rates during battles.
I'm not clear on how they work for speeding up travel between planets however. I'm mostly looking to understand why several million engines on a fleet of less than several million ships doesn't appear to meaningfully speed up the couple thousand alks that slow down the fleet travel time.
Specific questions on the mechanics:
1. If I have 1,000 ships, do I need 1,000 engines to see any speed increase on the transit time?
2. Does the answer to #1 change based on whether there's mixed fleets with some slow ships & fast ships?
3. If I have more than 1:1 engine to ship, is there increased benefits?
4. What is the magnitude of the benefit? Is it a fixed amount of speed gain, relative to weight, a % gain, or something else?
Thanks!

A fleet's speed is equal to the speed of the slowest ship.
Each ship has a base speed which you can see in the shipyard. Engines loaded give a % bonus to each ship speed, which i think is 1+engine/5million
Or, in other words, for every 5 millions engines each ship gets a +100% base speed. Speed has a cap of 100. i hope the numbers didnt change in the last patches :)
If we take a fleet with alkantaras (0.15) and sibers (0.7), it will move at a speed of 0.15. if you load 10 million engines (+200% bonus), it will move at a speed of 0.45. if you only had sibers, it would have moved at a speed of 2.1.
If we consider only the effect of speed on travel time, then you can say that naturally fast ships reach the 100 cap with less engines than naturally slow ship.
Speed also affects combat, as you pointed out, and the formula is quite complicated. You can approximately think that if your speed is vastly superior to the enemy you will enjoy a 90% damage reduction, and your damage will be the "maximum" it can be. Ship weight also enters the calculation, so heavy ships get less of a benefit compared to light ships, but in the end 90% damage reduction is what you can expect as the dimishing returns are extremely severe. There are no drawbacks to engines, so if you have less than 100b, then raise the production :)

Thanks for the formula! The 5mil stat is good to know for both travel and combat speed. I now have about 8mil on my war fleet so it sounds like the next trip should take less than half the time.
The 90% rule of thumb is helpful for combat math as well. Now that I'm at the wall for Xora, I'll have to stop being lazy and embrace my inner analyst to dive deeper into the combat system and model out some ideas beyond what the battle calc & ship builder can show me.

I just built an Anger of Perseus and was surprised to see it's speed at a tiny 0.04, compared to 0.15 for Alk's.
The 10mil engines I have thankfully cut down travel times by several hours getting to Bharash to get 160 exp and then Teleras for some tournament.
