### MaD2 Save Files
MaD2 saves data via SharedObjects (aka “Flash Cookies” aka *.sol* files), which are then stored locally **on your computer** by Flash. The game *can not* write or read any files outside the chat.kongregate.com folder on this site, **making backups is your responsibility**.
If you use the Custom Item feature a lot, the game may ask you for more disk space with a settings dialogue. ([More info on Adobe’s site.](http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help06.html))
#### **Files**
`items.sol`
Contains the names and saves of all your Custom Items.
`itemsBackup.sol`
Contains all the Custom Items you've created since the file was added (2019).
Note that items are only ever added to this file, and never removed even if you delete them in-game, so that even if the items file messes up there's a chance to restore data from this file. Contact me if you need to do this.
`settings.sol`
Contains all your game settings.
`models.sol`
Contains all your Local Models you've added via the Library.
`menus.sol`
Contains your saved menu positions.
`saves.sol`
Contains any saves you've favourited via the Content Menu, and a rolling list of backup saves the game keeps as you save.
`savesBackup.sol`
Same as itemsBackup except for saves.
To find the above files easily, I recommend using [Everything](https://www.voidtools.com/support/everything/) (who I am not affiliated with, I just like the software.)
#### Save Folders
You can also find your save folders with all the files manually if Windows search lets you down and you don't want to install anything.
The below instructions are on Windows 10, other OS location may differ.
**Firefox**
1) Open `%AppData%\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects`
(by entering it into Explorer's address field, or into the [Win+R] Run dialogue.)
2) Open the only folder there (that's named something weird with letters and numbers, it's some kind of personal ID for you)
3) Open the folders `chat.kongregate.com -> #orava -> mutilate`
4) You should now see your .sol files.
**Edge**
1) Open `%AppData%\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects`
2) Open the only folder there (that's named something weird with eight letters and numbers)
3) Open the folders `#AppContainer -> chat.kongregate.com -> #orava -> mutilate`
4) You should now see your .sol files.
**Opera**
1) Open `%AppData%\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Pepper Data\Shockwave Flash\WritableRoot\#SharedObjects\`
2) Open the only folder there (that's named something weird with eight letters and numbers)
3) Open the folders `chat.kongregate.com -> #orava -> mutilate`
4) You should now see your .sol files.
**Chrome**
0) Open `%LocalAppData%\Google\chrome\User Data\`
1) Open your profile folder (may be "Default" or "Profile 1/2/....")
2) Navigate to `\Pepper Data\Shockwave Flash\WritableRoot\#SharedObjects`
3) Open the only folder there (that's named something weird with eight letters and numbers)
4) Navigate to `chat.kongregate.com\#orava\mutilate`
5) You should now see your .sol files.

### Backups & Migration
**Please make regular backups of the files if you use Custom Items, Local Models, or Favourite Saves.**
Perform a back up by simply copying the files somewhere safe (not the same folder!), and copying them back if you ever need them. The filenames matter so don’t rename them.
If you change computers (or browsers) you’ll have to migrate the files over manually by moving the above files in the appropriate new location.
If you can't find the save location restore your files, launch the game and create a new custom item (to ensure that the items file exists), and then locate that file, and copy the backed-up files in that folder.

### Deleting & Reseting
### **!!!**
Clearing your browser’s cache, deleting cookies, reinstalling, running registry cleaners, or anything similar will likely **delete** all your settings and items. This functionality differs between different pieces of software so I can’t definitely answer whether or not something is safe. **Make backups** if you want to keep your stuff.
### **!!!**
I’m in no way responsible for the files since they’re stored on your computer locally, and the game will never delete items or settings without user input.
You can manually delete all the .sol files in the MaD2 folder to make the game regenerate them. (Basically “Factory Settings”.)

### Local storage not working?

# Restoring Custom Items
As mentioned above, MaD2 keeps a backup file of the custom items you create, `itemsBackup.sol`.
Should you need to restore it, please follow the steps below. Restoring can be done either via the console in-game, or manually.
- **Doing so will overwrite your currently loaded items, so only do it if everything is broken.**
- Save backup functionality was added early 2019 so older content won't exist there.
- The backup file only stores items you've created via the Detail Tool yourself, not those loaded from anywhere else.
----
**Via Console**
0) Close the game and locate the files with your favourite file explorer following the file paths above.
1) Back up `items.sol` and `itemsBackup.sol` file by
copying them in another folder in case you mess up everything
2) Open the console by focusing the game (click on it), and pressing the [Home] key
3) Type `itemsbackup` and press [Enter]
4) Close console by entering `close`, or by unfocusing it and pressing [Home]
5) Check [Library > Custom Items]
6) Use [Custom Items > Manage > Remove] to delete any duplicates and items you don't wish to keep
7) Press [Custom Items > Manage > Save] to store the items

# Factory Reseting Settings
Reset your settings to default in-game via [Settings > Menus > Reset].
If you can't get in-game, you can manually delete the save files:
0) Locate the save folder (see above)
1) **Back up all the files in it by copying them somewhere else (e.g. your Desktop)**
I need them to fix the issue.
2) Delete _settings.sol_ in the save folder (not the backup) and restart the game.
If this solves your issue, you can skip (3-4).
3) Delete the rest of the files and restart the game.
4) Delete the whole save folder and restart the game.
If deleting the files solved your issue, **please send me the files you backed up so I can find out what the underlying issue is and fix it**! (DM on Discord or Twitter is the best way to do so. Links are in-game.)

# Migrating Files to MaD2 Download
MaD2 uses the exact same settings and content files on the web and download. You can simply move them over after finding the folders they're saved in.
To do so:
0) Launch MaD2 download, modify any setting (e.g. click on the volume slider,) and close it. Doing this will make sure that the game has created the settings folder so you can actually find it.
1) Locate the web files you want to copy over. See the main post for instructions on how to find the files for each browser.
2) Back up all the web and download files by copying them somewhere safe (e.g. your Desktop in separate folders) in case you mess up.
3) Copy the files to MaD2 download's save folder (below), by copying and entering it into Windows Explorer's address bar, or the Run menu (Winkey+R).
`%appdata%\games.rava.mutilate\Local Store\#SharedObjects\#orava\mutilate`
4) Launch MaD2 download again. Your settings and content should now be accessible.
