When a monster's attack roll & modifiers are so high that you don't have any chance to defend, we speed things up by not showing your defense roll.
However, we are actually doing the roll, and if the elf rolls high enough to dodge (or the human high enough to riposte), then the Dodge/Riposte happens.
That's not an ideal approach because it's obviously confusing, and we plan to change it. We may just always show the hero's defense rolls. Until then, please know that the elf is not being deprived of her dodge chance.

Is there any chance you could just skip the animation for the roll, when that happens or have a toggle to skip roll animation entirely.
