There's no real recommended order beyond gradually working outwards from the middle. As you get more experienced, you will be able to judge how difficult a challenge might be from the description.
Having said that, here's the order from the early game guide (https://www.kongregate.com/forums/982279-pixels-filling-squares-3-0/topics/1698160-a-guide-for-early-game-and-challenges):
E4, F4, D4, E5, F5
G6, E6, G5
E3, F3, D3
G3, D5, D6, F6
C4, H7, G4, H5, I5, D7, D8
C5, C6, G7, H6, H3, G2, D2, C3
B6, B2, H1, H8, C8, I7, C1, C7, I2, B5
After this (B5 is a huge bonus), go back and fill any holes left in your skill grid, and then it's fairly straightforward to do the rest. A8 is the most difficult challenge by far, so leave it until the very end.
