If you open a bonus level, when you complete that bonus level you can proceed to the next one without the required number of skulls.

Game appears to bug out between levels starting around 20ish... otherwise reasonably good. Also you can just continue to next bonus levels even if they're not unlocked. Can't give it more than 3/5 with the bugs, too frustrating to reload every level 1/2 through.
