it would be nice to have historical borders such as byzantines, polish lithuanian comonwealth, loads of wierd russian states, same with italy and india etc

Just build pikes. You dont need to put them into formation. Its also possible on hard level 8 (haven't tried on insane). After you're having no empty space you begin to upgrade them. You only need to adjust your fight mode on the terrain .

The game begins by mentioning a historical backdrop of the 13th century, but shows a post-1971 map. There ARE plenty of period maps, why not use one of those? Breaking the immersion before the game begins makes it that much harder to hold onto interest. Especially with such simplified combat.

A little late for hints but thought i would add and hopefully get some + ; A good strategy is to mass your army in the beginning. Do not worry about your 10% income each fight. As each battle finishes your remaining army that survived gets exp. Along with Using U to upgrade, you can easily get a full 12 levels ( all slots filled ) army before you even take out 10 countries.

Really fun game yet too easy. At first I was struggling as probably many others until I found good strategy. You need to manually prepare formations for about 2-3 battles then you just keep pressing "fight". My army consists of spearmen and archers only, only fight style I use is defensive since I need to preserve troops not stomp enemy as fast as I can. As I always outnumber enemy defensive is a good strategy. Basically you spam archers and spearmen until you fill all spots then keep upgrading spearmen in front rows to make them survive better. Soon enough you will notice that it is almost impossible to lose a battle.

I just want to share this with you. As far as I know, Genghis Khan is the leader of the Mongolian army. He defeated the army of the shah of the kingdom of Khwarizm with great speed and force. He even led an army and crossed a great desert and came right behind the gates of the city when the shah was about to escape with his loyal soldiers after receiving deadly attacks directed to different cities in his kingdom!

Once you have dealt with all the asian nations, invest heavily into cavalry. The middle eastern plains will allow you to just obliterate with your cavalry and get them lots of xp. Once your cavalry hits lvl 12, you should be fighting mostly mountains in europe. Use tactical stance and you are SET. Also, if your cavalry gets decimated,rebuild it with lvl 6 recruits. They should be just good enough to contend with the lvl 10 swords you'll see a lot of.

Fill every square with pikemen and keep putting money into upgrades (select unit and press U). If you can get the first two or three rows to level 5 then you wont have many problems with any of the countries.
