you skipped a crucial step how do u make character u just skip to it were !!!!!!!!! please show me how to make character then ill be able to make a game
I'm confused by your question... if you mean making the graphics, either find something on Forge (or another free-to-use location), or use a graphics tool like Paint.NET.

Thank you, Abigayl. Couldn't ask for a better introduction to StencylWorks. Would only suggest a mention of Pencyl, if someone has an image they want to use for an Actor but just needs a quick tweak. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your series.
It takes daily checking to keep it up. I wish there was a simpler notification, but if it means I can help answer questions, I will continue to check by almost daily :)

Your tutorials are amazing!
I made this while going through them:

my player and enemies rotate randomly and the controls wont work right. I followed all of the steps, and it worked until i stared spawning enemies

(this is my last comment i promise, i just have a lot of problems) i have followed every command so far but for some reason my character wont appear on the testing section (the first time testing) i know that its ment to be bugged but the player still turns up on your version, please help as it's really annoying (it appeared last time, but that was when it didn't fit on screen)
The character should come up... since you seem to be on a lot today, feel free to come by my livestream (livestream.com/poweredbyflowers). There, if I am on, can give you help instantly (or as soon as I am done with whatever I am working on :P). If that doesn't work, could you screenshot the behaviors (make sure they're all attached properly) or upload the game to Forge and tell me the name?

okay i thought it would be a lot easyier than that, still need to know what site you used to make your character as all my images take up the whole screen for now i have a perfectly coded game but die instantly cause every enermy takes up the whole screen along with my player, just the website OR how to make images smaller when you put them in your game, but for now all i can do is programme the games

I finished the tutorial but when i test the game, my person can just push around the enemy and does not die , any idea what has gone wrong ?
Any help would be appreciated :)
Check your "kill" coding and see if there are any errors. For example, did you accidentally use "group for this actor's colliding shape" instead of "group for colliding shape"? If need be, send me a screenshot of the code, and I will try to help debug it.

I have got to the part in tutorial where we are playing your game... I have a problem, how can I make it where if I go off the screen it restarts?
Jacob, that's explained in tutorial 5. It was purposely left out of this tutorial to keep things simpler (and then waited until 5 since I wast trying to figure out the best way to explain simply).

wow, i thought it would be a lot more complecated than that, expect a game from me within the year (gonna make a collect and avoid game with a nice background and health) and i will be sure to mention you and your tutorials in the description as you helped me a lot
It can get more complicated (see my advanced tutorial), but Stencyl does a lot to help keep things simple. If you run into questions or issues, feel free to stop by my livestream. For making games, I suggest starting off simple. In fact, today begins the GITD contest (see the programming forums), which could provide an excellent starting place for you before diving into a year-long game. Either way, good luck :)

I don't know what i did fault, the enemy in the begin is just driving from the screen, and you can bounce him with you other character.

Hmm do I delve into making games? haha this is a great idea that you can draw others into doing this although there is a temptation to leave it to others :s Good luck with this though it's a great idea I think.
I think it is beneficial to try making your own game, at least once. It gives a new appreciation for video games when you have tried to make one yourself.

I used to make games in Game Maker, but a couple of things made it so difficult. This "Stencyl"
is good, understanding and not complicated! Now, I use Game Maker as for sprites and this for the programming. Your tutorial is understanding for begginners. I rate the program 8.7, but this tutorial? Thank you so much.
You can either delete the whitespace (i.e. using an eraser tool), or when you upload it, select the white border as the transparent color (will be an option if you read all of the parts when uploading the graphic, tisn't in my guide though since the eraser/deletion is more reliable).

I dont understand some of this, which is ok because I dont understand a lot of things but i usually get the basic idea after a few tries, so i'll keep working on it :)
Are you getting an error message? If not, the most likely issue is that you forgot to attach a behavior (either to the screen or to an actor). Make sure they each have their behaviors attached. If that doesn't do it, feel free to PM me with more info and will try to help.

THanks for the tutorial, this was very helpful. Funny story, I did this tutorial and thought, "Maybe 8-directional movement would be better." So I tried to code it simply but it would not work. So I went on stencyl to download someone elses 8-directional code, and it was so complex and I stared at it, dumbfounded, thinking to myself, "How is adding diagonal directions in a game so confusing?"

i would like to point out that stencylworks has its own version of paint (pencyl) built in. it is nearly exactly the same as paint and saves the trouble of uploading and so forth, all you need to do to open it is click "create (or edit) frame external" on the animations page, i find this is much easier

I love you. You've helped me so much, responded to my comments, and created this lovely tutorial. This jump-started my game developing :)
I use Paint.NET. It's a free, powerful tool, but it only works on Windows. There's also GIMP and some other free graphics tools. Those are the two though I would recommend (Paint.NET for Windows users, GIMP for others).

i like the end of your tutoral how you can play the game on here and not need to do it in the softwere that you used to create it(i din't have it on my computer) it's so fun! i <3 it!
I'm glad you enjoyed it :). I think a lot have liked the extra I do at the end. It also gives those who have done the programming a chance to compare what they have made with what the tutorial was supposed to make ;).
Please note that Stencyl 2.0's setup is a bit different. Once it comes out of beta, I will be making another set for it. The pieces though are all the same.

This is really helpful, I was overwhelmed by the coding screen when I tried to make a game, but now it makes a lot more sense. As a side note, if you drew the instructor person, you are also a very talented artist.
I'm glad it helped out :). The instructor is actually the rough draft of my avatar, which the very talented ilolamai drew for me: http://ilolamai.deviantart.com/

The game does not load for me. :( and I really wanted to know how to make a game. I tried all five totorial and none work.
Robo, try again. They were all down for a very short time for me as well (as well as my games). They should work now. Was a Kongregate-wide (or at least all my games) temp crash.

Also, can I make tiles that the enemies pass through but you don't? I tried, and I checked my collision groups, but everyone still collides with the tiles.
You can make actors that look and act like tiles and then do custom collision groups with them. I too have had issues with tiles and thus rarely use them... so I'm afraid I can't help much more than that.

Thanks! I've tried so many other websites and tutorials, but this stencyl and this one are easily the best! I only ask for one thing: can you add the number of slides on your tutorial, (If you haven't already, I haven't checked out the other ones yet).
The number of slides is roughly 70-90, depending on the tutorial. Since I don't have any space to write out the slide number, instead there is a bar that goes across the bottom that visually shows about how far in the tutorial you have gotten.
Thankfully that has not been the response; at least the ones that have been brought to my attention are generally users' own takes on the tutorials or at least some tweaks to the set. I have seen a few direct clones, but a good portion are building their own games with just the ideas learned from the series.
