Under rating threshold (show) hey moose I did a little bit of searching since I had the same problem as you and I found out that in the new stencyl 2.0 update to get your always statement click add event open basics and then click on When Updating and you will get your always statement.

Developer response from Abigayl

Oh, that was the question. Thanks for your help :)

Under rating threshold (show) So I guess the Actor was supposed to keep moving, mine didn't move at all :'( I don't know what I did wrong everything looks the same.

Developer response from Abigayl

Did you remember to attach the behavior to the actor?

Under rating threshold (show) Could anyone tell me how to make my player collide with things?

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Use the collision groups to determine what hits what (in the Game Center, you can change the settings) and collision coding to tell it what to do when they collide.

Under rating threshold (show) Doesn't seem hard, bet it's the simple part, it's easy to understand since I had some RPG Maker experience, and the event screen looked like much more complex than this, this event screen looks easyer to understand sice it use's those shapes, like the "if", and had different collors too. Great tutorial though, im getting Stencyl as soon as I can!

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Stencyl can be a rather deep development tool, but it also is rather nice to newcomers, forming a nice balance between the two. If you come from other experience, it shouldn't be too bad to start making something decent. :)

Under rating threshold (show) In case people don't see it in the instructions, here's the changes to 2.0: Categories no longer exist, ignore that step. You need to “add events” (option on the left side) to get the headings. For example, “always” is “when updating”. Collision is now handled as the event “collision with actor of type”, and you use the type instead of “group for colliding shape”.

Under rating threshold (show) Can you update tutorial for 2.0? I'm having difficulties finding a lot of these things that you're doing.

+ - !

(1)

Developer response from Abigayl

Instead, I am doing an entire new set for 2.0 as soon as I am done with my latest game. EDIT: Just added the three major changes in the instructions heading.

Under rating threshold (show) I can't find the "group for colliding shape" in Stencyl 2.0, where is it?

+ - !

(1)

Developer response from Abigayl

That has changed to "Add Event" -> "Collisions" -> Actor Collides with Type/Group (can generally take your pick from there).

Apr. 21, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) FUN FACT :D stencyl took the design from another program called "scratch" what i mean is that the snap together mode was based off of scratch's

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

I have heard that the styles are similar but that Stencyl is much more powerful. I have never tried the other program for myself though.

I'm confused by your question... if you mean making the graphics, either find something on Forge (or another free-to-use location), or use a graphics tool like Paint.NET.

Under rating threshold (show) Thank you, Abigayl. Couldn't ask for a better introduction to StencylWorks. Would only suggest a mention of Pencyl, if someone has an image they want to use for an Actor but just needs a quick tweak. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your series.

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

I would do a mention of Pencyl... if I ever used Pencyl myself. You are correct though that others may use it a lot.

Under rating threshold (show) (this is my last comment i promise, i just have a lot of problems) i have followed every command so far but for some reason my character wont appear on the testing section (the first time testing) i know that its ment to be bugged but the player still turns up on your version, please help as it's really annoying (it appeared last time, but that was when it didn't fit on screen)

+ - !

(3)

Developer response from Abigayl

The character should come up... since you seem to be on a lot today, feel free to come by my livestream (livestream.com/poweredbyflowers). There, if I am on, can give you help instantly (or as soon as I am done with whatever I am working on :P). If that doesn't work, could you screenshot the behaviors (make sure they're all attached properly) or upload the game to Forge and tell me the name?

Apr. 06, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) okay i thought it would be a lot easyier than that, still need to know what site you used to make your character as all my images take up the whole screen for now i have a perfectly coded game but die instantly cause every enermy takes up the whole screen along with my player, just the website OR how to make images smaller when you put them in your game, but for now all i can do is programme the games

+ - !

(3)

Developer response from Abigayl

Most graphics programs have a "resize" option in them. Look in the image menu.

Under rating threshold (show) Help me. My player doesnt die when i hit it but rotates 360 degrees.

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Check your "kill" coding and see if there are any errors. For example, did you accidentally use "group for this actor's colliding shape" instead of "group for colliding shape"? If need be, send me a screenshot of the code, and I will try to help debug it.

Under rating threshold (show) I have got to the part in tutorial where we are playing your game... I have a problem, how can I make it where if I go off the screen it restarts?

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Jacob, that's explained in tutorial 5. It was purposely left out of this tutorial to keep things simpler (and then waited until 5 since I wast trying to figure out the best way to explain simply).

tamtarter

Apr. 05, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) wow, i thought it would be a lot more complecated than that, expect a game from me within the year (gonna make a collect and avoid game with a nice background and health) and i will be sure to mention you and your tutorials in the description as you helped me a lot

+ - !

(2)

Developer response from Abigayl

It can get more complicated (see my advanced tutorial), but Stencyl does a lot to help keep things simple. If you run into questions or issues, feel free to stop by my livestream. For making games, I suggest starting off simple. In fact, today begins the GITD contest (see the programming forums), which could provide an excellent starting place for you before diving into a year-long game. Either way, good luck :)

Under rating threshold (show) Hmm do I delve into making games? haha this is a great idea that you can draw others into doing this although there is a temptation to leave it to others :s Good luck with this though it's a great idea I think.

I think it is beneficial to try making your own game, at least once. It gives a new appreciation for video games when you have tried to make one yourself.

Apr. 04, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) I used to make games in Game Maker, but a couple of things made it so difficult. This "Stencyl" is good, understanding and not complicated! Now, I use Game Maker as for sprites and this for the programming. Your tutorial is understanding for begginners. I rate the program 8.7, but this tutorial? Thank you so much.

Under rating threshold (show) im confused, i made a character in paint, but he has a white background so how do i get rid of that?

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

You can either delete the whitespace (i.e. using an eraser tool), or when you upload it, select the white border as the transparent color (will be an option if you read all of the parts when uploading the graphic, tisn't in my guide though since the eraser/deletion is more reliable).

Under rating threshold (show) When I try to test my game nothing happens :/

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Are you getting an error message? If not, the most likely issue is that you forgot to attach a behavior (either to the screen or to an actor). Make sure they each have their behaviors attached. If that doesn't do it, feel free to PM me with more info and will try to help.

Apr. 02, 2012

Under rating threshold (show) THanks for the tutorial, this was very helpful. Funny story, I did this tutorial and thought, "Maybe 8-directional movement would be better." So I tried to code it simply but it would not work. So I went on stencyl to download someone elses 8-directional code, and it was so complex and I stared at it, dumbfounded, thinking to myself, "How is adding diagonal directions in a game so confusing?"

Why not just move on to Tutorial 2 where I demonstrate how to do it? ;)

Under rating threshold (show) i would like to point out that stencylworks has its own version of paint (pencyl) built in. it is nearly exactly the same as paint and saves the trouble of uploading and so forth, all you need to do to open it is click "create (or edit) frame external" on the animations page, i find this is much easier

(1)

Developer response from Abigayl

Aye, Pencyl is a decent tool. I've used it some myself. In the end, it's all about finding a program that works for you :)
