Our plan is to make the points useful as a currency for upgrades. However, you'll also need to find artifacts (and maybe samples of alien wildlife?) in order to do research that unlocks those upgrades.
Also, lives will definitely be removed - they were just put in for this contest, since you could otherwise just get an infinite high score. In the future, you'll just lose some money and whatever items you've grabbed from the cave so far.
The plan is to have fully customizable robots, which can have different tools equipped for different jobs. Nothing is set in stone yet, since we're still working out all the details, but if you're interested in learning more about what we're working on, please follow our development log at http://www.mildlydisconcerting.com/drillboid.
Thanks for all the feedback, we'll definitely take a look at how we can improve the game based on your comments!

Why do they send a robot to collect this orb no one knows what it does or what its used for. All we could know its a weapon of mass destruction that can destroy huge planets and space stations!

We actually added the lives purely for this kongregate release, we'll definately be removing them once we have more of a goal to the game. Eventually the main goals will be collecting all the different parts, finding all the areas and completing the storyline. Just so there is no confusion, these things haven't been implemented yet!

Thanks for so many comments everybody. We'll be adding loads more stuff to this game before it's finished including a story and lots of upgrades. So far we've only worked on this for a month and a half, over the next few months it will grow a lot!
We appreciate all your encouragement and criticism and we'll try our best to take it all on board as we continue to work on the game.

Look, I must say that I don't like THIS game. It's still too empty, but has alot of potential. When you release the new version you MUST add the following : Upgrades, More planets, Easier to access caves (cuz I found a small cave and lost it and had to search around to find it), Caves namable, more planets, minimap (could be an upgrade and upgradable). ( Continued ----> )

Asthetics are nice, controls.....not so great. It would be easier to use WASD for movement in conjunction with the mouse and space bar for drilling, firing, and jumping...even ctrl or shift would be better.

Beautiful graphics, fantastic animation, great music, awesome effects
man I didn't knew unity could look that pretty.
But yeah I agree with some of the comments in here, this needs some sort of upgrade path, maybe different objectives, exploring the caves to get the orb might get boring after a couple of times.
But since this is still under development I guess you guys have many plans yet to implement, can't wait for future updates.

Impressive!, this was some eyecandy with function, i must say, this got some roots in minecraft and motherload, but what games does not have roots! congratulasjon, i look forward to you make the one step closer to motherload and allow massive roboot upgrades :D

It appears this game's development is dead. Shame really. What I've seen looks promising, but the limitations make it unplayable for me (controls are clunky, mining is awkward at best). The game really shines with potential, that from the looks of it will never be reached.

What!? your telling me i cant drill a enemy to bits, i can only shoot them! How limited is this game. they should allow you to combat enemys with your drill cause it sucks not being able to do just that.

Simply put, it's MotherLoad meets Minecraft.
As far as a "proof-of-concept" game, this really is excellent. If some features get added (upgrade shop with different weapons, more jetpack fuel, better drills, etc) it really could be a lot of fun.

Upgrades. Different material. The ability to create your own upgrades and abilities through the obtainment of materials/other components. Please.

nice game but there should be upgrades for the bot and weapons i like it but its not done yet. :( too bad all i like is the thrusters it looks alot like ironman... but i'm still hoping this finishes very soon though...

So I finish the tutorial, do my first cave and get back to the surface with over 200 time left, but the ship never picks me up, even when i'm standing right under it. lame. I think you should add a little portal of some sort on the surface so we know exactly where we need to stand to warp up.

Interesting blend of concepts; I think there's a fun game to be made here, although you're not there yet. The camera's zoomed in too close, making exploration tediously slow, or too easy to blindly run into enemies if you go faster. (Combining this with no health refills adds insult to injury.) The levels aren't that interesting on their own -- they look randomly generated -- and the enemies aren't fun to fight -- I can shoot stationary targets from usually-awkward angles, or get mowed down by really fast guys who come out of nowhere. Best wishes for future updates.

I KNEW I recognized this general art style(and the jetpack sound effect)! Great job, Bubs, you're really pushing the envelope for Unity games.
Also I wouldn't even bother finishing the Crobos if I were you--if anything, it'd be better to wait for DRL's Blaster Master thing that hopefully won't be horribly crippled by a shitty overbearing physics engine.

*scroll around planet, find small cave, click embark* half an hour later: "YOU CALL THIS SMALL???" 20 minutes later: *find the place with the orb, from underneath, start digging up and around it* 5 minutes later: *reach top of dungeon thing, realise that it was right near a place I visited about 5 minutes into the level; go down, grab orb, come up* two minutes later: "Can't find my way out, I guess I'll dig directly up." *hit rock* "WHERE DO I GO??" 13 seconds remaining on the clock: *reach the finish line!* 20 seconds after finishing: THERE'S A MINIMAP??? ------Excellent game, a well deserved 5/5, AND NOT EVEN FINISHED YET!

I apologise that you are offended by the unfinished nature of our game coolmike13. Feedback is very important for developing a really good game, we've already made a lot of plans to change things because of the feedback we've gotten from people on this very site. What you see here is the product of a month and a half of very hard work.

It would be nice to have up to jump and to be able to use the drill as a melee weapon. It's annoying having something that will drill through dirt and rock, but not sentient mushrooms.

Update: I don't want to be blown up when I decide to explore the underground world. Solution: New play mode or Free Digging.

I have some ideas to implement in the game. 1 Regenerating shield. 2 Gas pocket radar with % to found one near. 3 An Arpon with rope to descend safe or ball stance shield for some seconds to deflect the atacks and green rays. 4 More presure depending on the deep, that presure can slow more and more the robot. 5 Dark rooms or zones of the cave with enemies and the option to carry a torch to enlight that places. 6 Move, jump or use the items of the robot can use some petrol or gas to have a limited tank, and the same with batteries for the weapons. 7 Ball stance able to move or jump or drill maybe? 8 maybe also some zombies? XD
I really love this game, develope it more please!

Now I recomend some things NOT to add : Payment [this game should be free(maybe add extra content to buy, but not the main core of the game, The game must be free with extra content, not a trial free with full game to buy :) ], 3D (I believe that 3 dimensions would make the game too complicated unless it is to change ridiculously much, which would make it another game :P ), after-drill back ground (I mean the different back ground wich remains after you drill a box. Its annoying and confuses the player on wether there is a block there, when in rush to get out of the cave, after the count down). Thank you for reading the comment to the end, and I hope these reqests are fulfilled ^^.
P.S. "To the kong members" Please, if you are to rate up or down my comments, plese do so for BOTH!! These would normally be one comment but kong's char limit, forced me to divide them. Thank you.

Needs upgrades, Making it so the jet boot thingies can make you fly would be cool maybe instead of there being a million caves on planet making diffrent planets, and something to tell you how deep you are would be cool.

A pleasant and good looking game. Controls are quickly learned and the reactions to button pressing is precise, what you give is what you get - often you find newbie game dv's giving their characters horribly slippy controls.
Do I have any gripes with this game? Yes, but they are minor ones, it would be fun to upgrade our robot, so that it can drill through steel perhaps? And rather than shooting the denizens of the deep and having to run before everything blows - exploration could be a possibility?
But really, that'd be a "part two" if anyting.
All in all a good looking game with steady playability.
Full marks!

Word up from DataRealms! Haven't been on the forums for years, but just checked the Dev Log to look for any news on CC. Awesome stuff, Bubs and Banana. Always loved your stuff.

Game is amazing. Especially graphics. But you really should add some upgrades or something wich will make people play it very very long.
