I wish it was more realistic on the types of shot. Because the knippel shot (chain shot) was made to damage especially sails, and didn't do much damage to the hull. The standart cannonball was the most hull damaging (besides the exploding shot). And the Grapeshot was made to kill the crew, and the damage it did to the hull was insignificant. So I suggest that you separate the whole-ship-health-gauge into three different types: the sails gauge, the hull gauge, and the crew gauge. If the sails are damaged your ship would become very slow, but not hull-damaged. If the crew is killed your cannons would take longer to reload and the maneuverability would basically suck.

I enjoyed how realistic the game play was. Its a solid game, but it simply lagged too much for me to get deep in the game. The graphics got the best of my laptop I guess. The constant resetting of the zoom was a vex on the game play as well. Besides all that, I give it a 4/5.

This could be a great game. A few things that would really need to be fixed though.
To start get rid of the mouse. Having to use the mouse makes playing this game on a laptop impossible. Just make it so that you can use the mouse AND 2 keys (Z fire left, X fire right).
Also adding the ability to upgrade different parts of the ship with cash and or xp. Not sure if leveling your character helps out at all but that could also be added to really make it so people can fine tune their ships. Otherwise its a pretty fun game.

I'm trying to like this game too, I mean what's not to like about the time period? But trying to sail the ship and hitting your target while not getting hit yourself is nearly impossible. Especially when you don't know where your enemies are going to come from. The whole thing is just awkward, ya know? And it would be nice if you weren't either going full speed or stopped. Surely there must be some inbetween?

itll be nice if there were different types of ships- some w. good firepower, some good spd, some good agility, acceleration, hitpoints, etc. but each ship should have some bad things too

Kept crashing for me on the loading screen, addition of the "play" option in the right-click menu would be good since that usually fixes it, and yes I did try refreshing.

This game runs awful on my computer, which is a shame, because I really enjoy it. I don't have the fastest computer in the world, but I've never had any problems before running flash games. It worries me now that these flash games come with "system requirements". My comp is 1.8GHz. 768MB RAM. 128MB graphics card.

Decent game, but Sid Myers Pirates did this same game 4 years ago, and it's a full fledged game with realistic graphics. You can snap it up for around $20 on the net, it's good for about 2-3 months of casual play.

Well, I think this is a really awesome idea and a pretty good game. I bet a sequel would be amazing! Needs more ways to control the stats than just hiring crew, I think.

Decent game, though some critical points.
1) First game to ever crash my browser on Kongregate.
2) Uncontrollable zooming, and only two grades of 'speed'.
3) Doesn't really feel like sailing, more like Need for Speed: English Drifters. See Pirates! or other such games for more accurate representations.
4) Upgrades are maxed (all 40's and the gaps filled with the next highest) by level 2 of the arcade. Is this normal?

Nice game. My browser keeps crashing (I use Firefox). Controls are frustrating. Concept is cool.
Because of the negatives, I only can give a 3/5, otherwise it could have been higher.

I have to comment this game: absolutelly amazing concept and idea. I love the history facts (they could be improved and enlarged though). It could be improved with more ships as well so we could hire more crew).
I just regret all the other games I rated with 5, because I can't give a 6).
PS: To all of you complaining about turning and moving, drop the anchor and you can do whatever you want).

the way you move is almost like you were swimming, not on a boat. also, you can buy everything that won't make any difference

Lots of good things. Could add the option to buy new ships, or improve the ship and the crew. It would be nice to know if there is a difference between the three types of shot. They are listed with nice description, but they aren't rated by damage or loading time (a good way to make the most powerful weapon the slowest loading). I agree with others who have mentioned that dropping anchor is not the best way to control the accel/descel of the ship. In a real ship, dropping anchor at the wrong time would tear apart the deck, or just result in killing crew members if the chain failed. In the game it does have a fun sort of e-brake effect if you can master it though. :) I could really see a second episode of this game with some tweeking of the physics and some added personalization for the player.

BUGs and performance, nothing worse than waiting 3 secs for the cannon to fire after you clicked the button then other times it is immediate. Not worth the frustration.

The Sid Meier's Pirates from a few years ago is far superior in all aspects but that's a very unfair comparison. This is the best period naval combat game I've seen for a free Flash game so it's definitely a 4. Handling feels like racing gocarts in mud and there should be more speed control than simply on/off. Granted that acceleration and deceleration are usually sufficiently slow to allow you to micromanage your anchor to a speed you want, but it's fiddly and ridiculous to have to do so. I do like the powder keg option, but the oversimplification of chain shot is jarring. Should be able to take down sails with chain shot then board and loot at leisure, at the least.

Very nice game and concept, needs badges as well ;)
but overall performances and user-friendly I have to agree with the comments of bbalboni. The handling is very hard to handle, even though you upgrade crew and it would be nicer if you can control how many sails :) but yes, it's rare gem to have a game like this

Am I the only one for whom none of the levels load on the latest FF browser? Vista 64-bit, but never had a problem with other games.
