Actually Hardcore mode is not that hard. Just be smart with when you reset. You can make a lot of mistakes and still win (I think I got ~ 2 spare pots). Once you get the sword you can farm free xp. Don't feel bad about it, because you need to be lvl 15 to beat the final boss and you will be only lvl 14 killing every other enemy once. Good luck!

shouldn't it be possible to start (or play) a hardcore game from the start? i say this because my game didn't save (just not enabling the konggames cookie, no big) and thus you would have to play through the whole game to access it. enabling that mode from the start could be nice

I missed some doors with gold keys in first floors. And now i have all skulls, but i can't open doors with wizards (when i back te starting areas). For example, i need to open 2 doors to find three keys behind it, but i have 0 keys, and 0 keys on the map)))

just did the entire thing, dying one time because I forgot a health potion, and then got the Actual exit, only to see that I did not win and would have to start all over again because I was a ghost, (if I am a ghost how did I kill those monsters and old guys? Why can I not leave the tower as a ghost?)

Got the hardcore. Grinding is unlocked with the magic sword. You do HAVE to checkpoint warp out of the nastier returns (something I didn't know was possible on the initial release), but with careful routing you can barely get to the final torch on your last potion. From there it's simple to max out and complete the rest of the game.

Hardcore mode gets MUCH easier later on. There's a layout you kind of have to figure out for the first level and around the first half of the second level. If you stray from the optimal path you won't do very well. But if you can make it to the third level okay, you can afford to make a few mistakes, especially with how many potions you should have. As soon as all the torches are lit, grab the pickaxe nearby then get the strong sword ASAP. What's great about the strong sword is that whenever you enter an area, all previously defeated enemies will die, but you'll still get experience. Yes, even in Hardcore.

please add a setting to automatically consume a potion instead of dying in hardcore mode. hate starting over because I didn't look at my HP :/

This game is both too short for grinding (normal mode), and too long for one puzzle (hardcore mode). It's not *bad* for each type, but could be better.
Needs a map and an identifier for what you haven't killed yet.

This game is fun on Normal mode, but it really shines on Hardcore mode. Congratulations Fluffy_Lotus on turning a dungeon crawler into a complex 3D maze. I wish this tricky design were in some mainstream games. Routing a successful run was a nightmare, so completing it feels wonderful.
For those wanting a hint: Do not re-fight enemies that can still hurt you after you collect the 'first kill' experience. It's not an efficient way to get experience and you just don't have the HP for it. I think it's possible to win with 0-2 re-fights, but up to 6 should still be okay. You can warp to checkpoints as a way to avoid re-fights. It may not be possible to win without warping to checkpoints (I tried and was short by a lot of HP).

Secret areas: 4, 12, 18, 40. These all contain skulls or paths to get them for floor -1 (all of this requires the pickaxe on the 46th floor) for the actual ending with the help of shanoc5902.

Maybe I didn't see it... but a little warning that the game doesn't save, so when I close my browser everything is gone, would have been nice.

Yet another tip for the hard badge. Once you get to a point where you can kill the blue skulls, stop farming for experience. Instead try to go deep as you can, killing the minimal number of monsters. The goal is to get the torch on the highest floor. Assuming you got all the torches along the way, this allows you to get the sword in section 2. The game is trivial after you get that sword. Just move back and forth quickly between two floors with monsters until you hit the level max (should take less than a minute).

If hardcore mode appears to be impossible, you may have missed something I did -- the checkpoint at the beginning, you can teleport back to it at any time, even in hardcore. This can avoid walking back through a group of foes and losing health

Nothing as frustrating as playing a game for a prolonged period of time to find out you used one too many keys and have to restart from the beginning. I wish you could re-lock doors and reuse keys so this didn't happen. Discourages me completely from playing the game.

Whew. Took a few tries, being careful to avoid backtracking through enemies that could hurt me. Warp to checkpoint helped me several times. This was great.

Ok, that last purple skull was a bongo to get, but I did it ! Glad I stuck with this game even if I didn't understand how it worked at first. Now, on to the hardcore mode !!!

got frustated when in hardcore difficulty needed to kill only 2 skulls but my hp and potion was empty. also died like 5 times just because forgot to heal or double clicked attack. still completed it. good game. need good memory and some planning.

This was inspired by the Fairune games, wasn't it? You've done a great job replicating them, and made it your own. 5/5

I Would like to point out a bug. Some walls can be passed through, i found it on the pillars with torches in some rooms, that is doesn't change the game. But there is one wall to exploit early. On floor 6, in the corner with the spider, you can cross the wall and get the key withouth opening the door and fighting.
Just a report, game is great, i love it! :D

I keep dying from simply forgetting to potion up instead of misrouting. I would love it if the hit that puts you on your last heart made a warning noise.

More hints for hardcore mode- Save the Red skull in section 2 until you can one-shot the archers, but try to get to the staircase that leads to that area ASAP since it has the 20th goblin. In section 3 kill all 3 skeletons on the floor with the checkpoint before going to the second floor to prevent having to refight the first two skeletons later, after that careful use of your potions should carry you through the section. Make sure to light all the torches for the special sword as you will still get 1 EXP when it auto-kills enemies letting you freely grind to handle section 4 no problem.

Some tips to help with Hardcore (still working on it myself), first avoid fighting enemies that you've already killed but have hurt you as much as possible, even if you take them out in two hits you'll spend 10 HP to get 10 exp, that's never a good trade-off, so use checkpoints to avoid backtracking as needed. Second, don't be afraid to kill an enemy that takes 3 hits to kill as for every first kill that costs 2 HP, you turned a kill that cost 1 HP to cost 0 meaning you're still getting 20 EXP for 2 HP, but once you can one-shot an enemy do your best to clear out all the first kills as you can never take less than 0 HP per 10 EXP. For section manage your keys to avoid fighting through enemies a second time. Section 2 benefits a lot in you getting the extra half a heart as that will increase your potions by half a heart. Section 3 is giving me a lot of trouble as the enemy placement requires very careful thought which is hard to plan out without access to maps. Hope this helps!

I completed hardcore mode when the game was just released. Back then, I did it without using checkpoints. That caused me quite some trouble. It is doable, but it's pretty hard. Upon reading the comments, I decided to give it another try, this time with checkpoints. Hardcore isn't nearly as hardcore with checkpoints as without. Without even using an optimal path, I ended up finishing the game with 8 hearts and 10 health potions left (I'm pretty sure you can finish with at least 11 potions left). At no point did I have a shortage of potions, the least amount I had was 1 or 2 at certain sections in the game (first few floors excluded before you actually have any at all). You can really mess up quite a bit before things become impossible. Without using checkpoints, I ran out of potions several times and path optimization was really important. Conclusion: if you don't want to make your game experience hard: use checkpoints! Fantastic game btw! Love the game-play and the whole game!

Im stuck. I died at the start once, but otherwise I cleared it all. I killed the flame and got the purple skull. But I am missing 2 red and 1 purple for the exit. where to get those?
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
I tried to complete hardcore 5 times before i realised that checkpoints works like quick travel. If you're grabing a key/potion/whatever and if you don't oneshot monsters on your way back, it's almost always better to quick travel and save a few points of damage. On lvl 42 i went for torches and getting pickaxe rather than fighting ice skulls and trying to get purple+red skulls. When you get all torches and sword, you get 1xp from monsters again and can grind lvls that way. Also skeletons is a bit tricky, but only fight them until you level up before starting killing priest. Kill skeletons guarding potions instead of farming keys, you really need potions at this point.

Man, I was sure there was going to be some twist where the old men were good guys all along and killing all of them led to the bad ending.

This looks like a dungeon crawl but it's more of a puzzle game. You can't just go around killing everything in sight because you will run out of potions and die. You have to calculate out which monsters to kill because early on if you kill the same rat a few times you will run out of potions and die. You don't get new equipment and gaining levels does not heal you. The game should be called "You will run out of potions and die".
