+ if you think the first two badges need to be for "beginner" difficulty AND HIGHER. It's crazy to not get the badges because you're playing on a harder difficulty!

This is an old-school game. This game was clearly made with love for old turn-based games in mind. If you enjoy Disciples, or the Bard's Tale, Wizardry or Might and Magic, or any game where you have a party of NPCs with you, you will enjoy this.
To answer Livold, who asked about scoring points: that's what the Rating button in-game is for. It's not for a New Grounds or Kongregate rating, it tells you the score rating of your party.
It tells you stuff you might not realize, like that using Shrines subtracts from your score.

Actually, the thing I miss most from Book of Dread is the shop. You wind up throwing away tons of items here. Still a great game.

I'm level 24 on this site, and this was the first game I played. Just now I finally got my very first impossible badge after two years on this website (don't play during summer.) I used a team of all cerlics. It is actually very easy and it wasn't very long for me (a few hours) to get to level 50 with virtually no trouble, using advice I got from here.
First cerlic was all str, second was end, third was str, and fourth was int. Throw random stuff on your first Cerlic, then armor and health regain on your second, speed and endurance on your third and power regain on your fourth. (Also, place the fourth in the middle back.) After the initil hardships of the first few floors your team becomes amazing, you'll see how. Do EVERYTHING for the first 20 levels. Then only fight bosses and avoid fights until level 30. After level 30 you can easily avoid battles and get to level 50 easily. I hope this helps guys :)

Having played Book of Dread first, I definitely miss the automatic pathfinding, but that's about it. Still a solid game even without the add-ons.

Just wanted to throw in my support for the bumped comment about using four clerics. Couple things Ericzander didn't mention in his bumped comment: since all characters have the option to heal, the team's flexibility increases greatly. Also, since clerics can wear heavy armor and use maces, this healing flexibility comes with the added benefit of not sacrificing too much attacking or defending ability. The only thing you might consider changing is getting rid of the cleric you use for "equip dumping" and replace it with another class; I would go with ranger or rogue.

VoiZod, I am sorry that I am not able to answer your most recent question. I never had that problem as the only time I ever used potions was on extreme, and even then, I limited my use of those. I play my characters so that they have full health and power before ending a battle, so that I never have that difficulty. And yes, I battle each and every group so that my characters can build up to be strong. Regarding my group building strength, I also carefully select which skills to give them, with each of my characters increasing only two or three, depending on which ones they need. If you tell us your party classes, maybe we can help you with some better strategies so that you won't need so many potions.

What should i do to be able to submit my score? I beat a level with over 2000 score but its not giving me the badge. surely i wont need to beat the whole game for a easy badge.

Note that when the badge says to kill the Corruptor on beginner difficulty, you have to do it on beginner difficulty. Doing it on hardcore to get all of the achievements won't work, you have to go back and play it again on beginner.

Should be an option for just taking nothing but the potion. Sometimes I get a ton of useless loot but I'd like the potion (small or large) but clicking like 10 items is kind of tiring. Just a though if there's going to be another one.

Unfortunately, the boss is a joke if you have a rogue who is maximizing damage. Hide, pierce defenses, some help from your other party members and you're done in 2 rounds. I even got lucky and stunned him before he could move.

Flawlessly defeats 50 levels on Hardcore with full party of immortal Clerics for "Impossible" badge. Restarts the game with same Cleric party to obtain "Beginner" badge - dies on level 1.

A Warrior, A Cleric, A Mage, and A Ranger... in the battle against the Corrupter, the Cleric gets taken out quickly... the Anti-Mage has flickering flames on the Corrupter making any attack on it nigh-doomed to kill the attacker, despite the rest of his party falling around him the steadfast Warrior takes on all four of his anti-allies and the Corrupter, and through massive amounts of defense, use of Resolve, and damage reflection... managed to survive the fight and escape the den with his three dead allies slung over his back, epic win warrior, epic win.

I've read some comments and most of them are complaints about spending a lot of time equiping your characters, but for me it's the part of fun, I mean I find a lot of stuff and I enjoy the moment when I realise that some item that I found/achieved in hard battle is better then the one I have. The only thing that could be helpful is ability to switch between the characters with 1,2,3,4 buttons in inventory screen.

Man, it's amazing how much a difference one change can make! I keep thinking I should be saving items to sell at the shop...

Corruptor: "I here them coming. You six, go cram into that tiny room away from everything, they'll never suspect a trap there."
Lich: "But sir, we're your best fighters, shouldn't we be deployed on the frontline?"
Corruptor: "Frontline? What nonsense are you spewing? All our soldiers will be hiding in unorganized groups distributed randomly throughout this level. All except for you, Gargoyle, you alone will be defending the passage to my chamber."
Gargoyle: "Er... So I assume you'll back me up if the fight begins to go ill?"
Corruptor: "No, I will in fact not be confronting them until all of our forces get completely massacred."
Lich: "What?! Sir, I don't see the strategic value in-"
Corruptor: "We don't have time to discuss this, they'll be here any minute! Now go, and don't forget to unlock all our armories and treasure chests on your way out. They might need some new weapons after dirtying them hacking through all of you."

VoiZod: This is a strategy game and part of the strategy is to carefully choose which skills are most important to you, both at the particular time, and looking towards the future. Each of us has to deal with the consequences if we don't choose well. (Just because one doesn't initially choose well, doesn't mean that the game isn't a good game.)
You can always start the game over now that you are more informed and can better choose how you wish to proceed.
If you have any questions regarding this game, feel free to pm me.

Amazingmaziarz5: If I remember correctly, the the first boss is the Corruptor and its strongest power is to make clones of all your people, which basically have the same abilities as your own. (If you don't have the ability to stop him from using his ability, it would likely be best to make sure that your people do not have damage reflection.) Since I use a Cleric, a Ranger, and two Rogues, I find it easiest for my Rogues to use Sap Strength whenever needed so that it can't use its special abilities. You may also find it helpful to blind him, whether you use the Rogues' Flash Powder or the Clerics' Holy Light (which you should definitely use on the group if you had to allow the copies of your own people). If you have any further questions you are welcome to pm me. Good luck! :)

To those who aren't getting the impossible badge, I tried most of the combinations suggested here, and the one I was successful with was: 3 rogues and 1 cleric, keeping the 3 rogues at the front and the cleric at the middle back. Equip your rogues with health regeneration and your cleric with power regeneration. Give the rogues 2 points str and 1 point end every level, and your cleric all int. The best way to play is to make all your rogues use the 'create opening attack' every time, and keep your cleric's mana reserved for healing and revive. Btw, don't equip your cleric with heavy equip just cause he can, but always look for the ones with best power reg! Worked for me, hope it helps!

Kongregate recommended Monsters' Den to me because I (quote) "rated Kongai highly". Only problem: I gave Kongai 2/5. Since when is 40% a high rating? Oh well, at least it brought me here.

needs the ability to travel to any space on the map directly (that a open route is available for), not just the ones next to you.
doing so would save a *ton* of time/repetitive clicking

Four clerics works well, but there's another way.
Mage and rogue. Have the mage use the cosmic prison, then have the rogue use execute. Of course, you'll still want a cleric to serve as a meatshield / healer.

Very nice old school game, my team that was warrior , rogue , cleric and huntress and i get only 2 deaths. I enjoyed the theme with the Corruptor and the Dark avatars of my heroes, the toughest was my huntress and rogue.

How to save and load games in hardcore mode: Find files named party1.sol party2.sol party3.sol. Those are saves for your 3 party slots. Location of those files will be different on your system but it will be something like C: \ Users \ YourUserName \ AppData \ Roaming \ Macromedia \ Flash Player \ #SharedObjects \ 7BWSTQAA4 \ chat.kongregate.com \ gamez \ 0000 \ 5407 \ live \ monstersdenk.swf \ party1.sol Copy the saves into some safe place when you want to save, and copy the save file back when you want to load the game. When your party dies the game just deletes its save file. Copy it back and you'll be able to load game. Also, this way you can have more than 3 saves, just store the extra files elsewhere and move them back when needed.

Easy way to beat the Corrupter: Just get a Rogue with Sap Strengh, use that right away, before he can make shadow guys, and keep using that to keep his power level down, and it'll just be him, he can't make shadows without power. Hope this helps!

Another skill set with 4 clerics: give 3 of them more than 70 speed and max int (in the back) with litany of pain, and smite, and give the front guy be the fastest, with high armor, END, and health regen. Then give the meatshield in front anoint, and shield of faith. other stuff matters very little. Now on every battle just anoint your most powerful Litany dude and use litany three times. on bosses do the same, but after that turn use shield of faith and then smite away. once you get demonslayer stuff, you can give it to the dude in front to refresh him and make him EVEN MORE POWERFUL. VICTORY! ^.^

Replaying a lot of old kong games. Perma stunning and lowerin accuracy to spend rounds auto healing and regening off low enemies between fights is fun.

I love all the different strategies for the impossible badge. All of 'em seem to work pretty great. I'll throw mine in the ring anyway: four rogues! If you keep your quickness above 61, you're almost faster than anybody. So in easy fights, with three enemies or less, just smack 'em around with Poison and Create Opening. In battles with four or more bad guys, have everyone hide on the first turn, and then, next turn, everybody dies! Simple and oddly satisfying.

How to get to Level 50 hardcore in 3 hours: Endurance Warrior with big shield in the middle front. Cleric with high endurance next to it, used for healing. Rogue with strength, dexterity and endurance on front or in boss fights the back, mainly using sneak attack and drain health. A Mage with high intelligence, power regeneration and lethality, using mainly lightning and freeze. Don't bother with too many fights after level 30, use scrolls of deception to sneak to the exit. Kill a few leaders for equipment, but you should be able without. :)

Louexveeeye: actually, party defeat depends on which difficulty you select. These are the choices:
Beginner: Monsters have reduced health and damage. No penalty for party defeat.
Standard: Monsters have normal health and damage. Item loss on party defeat.
Hardcore: Monsters have normal health and damage. Game over on party defeat.
Extreme: Monsters have increased health and damage. Game over on party defeat. Fewer loot items.
So you must have played on either Hardcore or Extreme. With the exception of the first few levels, if you lost on Hardcore, then you either don't know how to play your selection of characters well enough or you haven't chosen the right group for yourself. So adjust accordingly to your needs. If you have questions about optimizing any characters by how to use their skills, we can help. Good luck!

I believe the equipment design is quite good, this is just an opinion mind you. It takes a while at the start but after a while it becomes more varied and it's a lot easier. Besides when you first get the equpment it does tell you what it's got and whether it's better or worse than the things already equipped by your team.
