As others said already, it's definitely the beginning of a great game there. For me, major issues are the general unfiendly-UI (infoboxes would be welcome on most buttons and stats, as well as range of fire for fortresses and boats), and, manly, the AI. Right now I'm stopping to play because in one of the maps the AI that attacked my fortress will just not approach because one of my boats is hidden behind... But they attacked !! They should be approaching... So with some work this is indeed a great game.

Great game but the i got attack a one fortress & 3merchant ship attack by a frigate & a brigantine. They just stay afk every round and refuse to attack.. stuck.

At hard, I conquered everything in 8 turns, without losing any battles and only 4 ships throughout the campagin. That's simply to easy.
The enemy fails even the simplest strategy. They'll routinely ignore ships one hit away from sinking, and fail to board my frigates with galleons (which is a certain win). Concentration of fire is the key to victory, and yet the AI divides fire evenly amongst my fleet. If this game is ever to get any better, this needs to be improved.

As a proof-of-concept game, this is great. I like the game a great deal. Some thoughts:
1. With the unit and fort cap at each location, the game difficulty is low.
2. There's no way to win by diplomacy.
3. Critical hits being an instagib might need revisiting, though I could see it going either way.
4. Attack range needs better indicators, i.e. same way you can see all squares to which a ship can move.

I'm not too sure if the damage formula is explained anywhere, but your cannons do a significantly higher amount of damage as they get closer to the target. This also makes them more vulnerable, but with enough ships to overpower a lone enemy rushing head-first into the battle seems to be the best way. I noticed the easy AI (deliberately) targets the furthest ship from it, making their cannons extremely uneffective. As the battles are rather slow, I didn't bother trying higher difficulties, but I don't think this is the right way to make an AI "easy". A second remark I would like to make is that the "boarding" (melee) attack ships have is very powerful if used correctly – basically, a ship can beat any enemy ship as long as it has more troops on board. This means a ship can shoot something, then board something smaller than itself to destroy it, with which you can sink entire fleets rather quickly. Please mention this somewhere and make AI's use it (occasionally).

A wild sloop appears. Galleon and fortress attack. Sloop uses critical hit, it's super efficient! Galleon sink inexorably and fortress is razed to the ground!

using a slope to move2-attack fort-move2 back I can take it out without taking any fire from it... so the cheapest ship game me a "free" capital of one of the enemies

Great starting point for a game! A few suggestions though: make battles more interesting e.g. by adding experience to ships and add a rock/paper/scisors concept to ship classes. also, construction time on ships and stronger fortresses/more buildings in general would make for more challenging conquests. random maps is another big need. but most important: make ships in battles move faster! please ;) just keep up the good work and make this game great. at this point, there is just not enough contend to get more than two stars.. 2/5

okey, I completed the game in 7 turns at my first try... is it possible to complete it in less turns? :D I just... destroyed everything...

also i thought a peace treaty was meant to stop war not make it erupt the next turn so for a rating it give this 1 star I love this type of game that is like civilization the franchise but when it given little cheating b*tchy ai and bad ai for that matter i hate it.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
one problem i see is that the ai can cheat by making you go closer so later while you have your giant 6 man guarded bases the enemy just sits there until you are in range and you can't just pass turns the enemy just sits there like the little B*tches they are and passes turns so they can hit you without going in range of a fortress

I know I've pointed out a couple problems with the game already, but there is an exploit in the ships' battle mechanics. If you move your ship next to an opponent's ship, you can fire on any other ships/buildings in range and then attack the other ship with your crew. Essentially your ship gets 2 attacks in 1 turn.

Nice little game, my only problem with it is perhaps how slow animations are, should have an option to have ships moving and shooting faster.
AI could use improvement

Difficulty: Hard
Victory in 13 turns
Your Losses: 0 fortresses, 9 ships
Enemy Losses: 18 fortresses, 59 ships
This game is a bit too easy, and most of the problem is bad AI.

finished the game with sloops only on hard mode... Just took a while to wear down the last capital; but with the criticals it was possible to kill them one by one

There absolutely needs to be animation skipping in combat. It makes the game slower than ever needs a reason to be. Also, hardest difficulty is far too easy, I conquered half the map with little resistance on my first try, and then lost interest, seeing as even if all the nations attacked me, I would still win. Seems to be the basis to a fun game, though.

I like the critical hit; it's the only thing that has a hope of stop a maximum fleet. Otherwise, a fleet of 6 large ship can defeat island after island with no losses. I would like for a battle to end immediately if a side has only Merchant ships remaining.

Brigantines easily take out fortresses. Move in 2, shoot, move out 2. Completely safe. Too easy. (Once you get speed upgrade you can do it with frigates.)
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
I think peace treaty should take 1 turn to disengage, since you can still attack even when in peace with another nation.
So doesn't have any impact right now in the game just gold sinking.

i wish i could see or know the range of my boat :p
Fortress is 4 squares diagonal include,
brigantine is 3 squares diagonal include,
sloop is 3 squares diagonal include,
frigate is 3 squares diagonal include,
galleon is 3 squares diagonal include.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
So even the hardest setting you can completely dominate with the low-tier Brigantine with little effort. I think this game needs some serious tweaking.

I'm pretty sure the idea of critical hits is to do usually double the amount of damage you would normally do, not instantly kill no matter how weak the hit is. This would've been a pretty good strategy game in my opinion if it weren't for the fact at how common crits are and how overpowered they are.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
Critical hits need serious rework. 3 of my frigates were destroyed in succession of each other by 2 enemy sloops and a fortress. I nearly lost that battle and had France severely outnumbered. PLEASE FIX
