Another thing that's helped my runs: Summon Oil is amazingly useful. It doesn't need line of sight, allowing it to be put anywhere you want, including inside panic rooms you haven't opened yet. While it's good for Fire Mages, since it effectively doubles fireball damage and AOE size, it's amazing for physical classes. Oil gives unstable, and every physical hit against a target on oil makes it slide backwards. Darts or melee, that's effectively giving you Power Strike on every single hit.

Finally, finally got the goblet with a rogue in 77:38, thanks to the power of a level 1 Lightning Staff and a level 2 or so Necro book... So basically a Rogue Mage, I guess? By the time he reached the core he was steam rolling all comers, almost purely on the power of Life Tap + Cannibalise with the occasional poison cloud. Also, fun fact: Yes, you *can* life leech the merchant for infinite health.

Excellent game. Barb is a bit tricky to play cuz you have limited player information to really keep the rage going so no playstyle is really rewarded.
Ranger ammo creation being manual kills a lot of time. Wonder if that could be streamlined.
Overall the game captures fun, and there is a great fairness to deaths. Ladder/stair-shuffling is a workable strategy which is a great homage to roguelikes, and the class system feels robust and aside from quibbles above well-tested. Rogues excel for speedrunning - though I died within sight of Yendor twice with a rogue and got my best record with a Storm Mage (32:0) of all things (finding a rogue book early to nab Dungeon Sense).
A lot of love went into this, and I appreciate the mix of minimalism and system mastery that this game entails. Have you played Red Rogue? Of rogue-lites, this and Red Rogue are easily my favorites, despite how different they are. Both are very "dungeon roguelike, but I only have an hour to kill".
:)
Thanks for all the feedback! I've never played Red Rogue, I think the only rogue-lite I've played is FTL. Most of the inspiration from this is coming from the big classics: DCSS, ADOM, TOME4 etc. The intersection of minimalism and depth is one of the key areas I try to make shine in all of my design. I'd like to just keep expanding the scope and depth of my games while maintaining simple, pick up and play gameplay at the core.

Do you mean FD? That's short for FooD, which can only be refilled by eating Meat (which can't be healthy for our poor scurvy-ridden heroes, but whatever). If it goes down to 0, you start taking damage over time until it is filled again.

@zepe456: Do you mean EP (Energy Points, aka Energy)? There's no FP stat. EP, though, is your mana/energy. Spells (e.g. Fireball, Life Spike, Poison Cloud) and activated abilities (like the Warrior's Power Strike or Charge or the Ranger's Summon Darts) use this resource. To gain more EP, increase your Focus stat on the Character page or equip items that boost your Energy.

@Manahimik If you get adjacent to one of them, you can run around them, and they won't be able to turn fast enough, letting you get 1 or two hits in before needing to move diagonally once or twice more.

One thing at a time man. Break it into chunks, then break those chunks into tiny tiny pieces. Figure out what the basic structure is first, then build each brick on top of that. Good luck with game dev. @lordfire48

Dang it this game is so fun. I was kinda planning to learn some programing and try making my own game (probably a JRPG or something like this one since 1. I like them and 2. programing wise they seem to be easier to deal with) but seeing this game Im bot encouraged and discouraged.
Encouraged because now I want to make something similar
Discouraged because this game so basic yet complex, I don't believe I can manage to make something like this without copying it.

Fun fun game, addicting too. I can only win with mages, not the physical classes. Wish there were achievements linked to Kongregate.

My game seems to randomly freeze? Like I can change weapons and bring up the character menu but I can't get the character to do anything including moving or waiting. This time it happened during the frame where a fire spell exploded and I think it happened like this before.

Also, for any further sequels, it may be an idea to give mages some form of weak dagger, rather than hand out one of the best three weapons in the game as freebies to accompany their vastly superior skill sets. Or at least take away the slap in the face that is attack accuracy, melee classes are bad enough without having to deal with even more random.

Game could really use a key for attacking with your equipped weapon. Dying because you clicked a pixel over the border between squares and moved instead of attacked isn't fun.

no matter how many times i try i cannot beat this f'ing game. i keep getting japped by half a dozen toughies or fried by poison shooting things that gang up on me from water... or wolves. change your save game feature to allow you to pick up from where you last saved after you die...that would be nice. but noooooo. die once, game over. that sucks ass.

omg this randomness... i got fire-necro-electro-ranged warrior-rogue. Actually i didnt use warrior, rogue and necro skills but getting 6 books in 1 run is hilarious. P.S. I didnt buy any of them, just got from enemies.

@Talanic I found the same thing as @anti_zealot except with an inferno sword. What's weird is, the damage from the inferno sword scaled with my melee stat, did not scale with my Fire stat, Stealth stat, or proc sneak attack. I can see a weapon that does only elemental damage working with the Melee skill (because it says melee not physical), but then it should scale with the appropriate elemental skill. The way it seems to work now is elemental weapons scale with the Melee skill and that's it, no elemental skills and no physical scaling skills (at least the 5% stealth skill bonus, or the rogue sneak attack).

Got it with necro in 43:51! at 30min I was at lvl 8, then started rushing. Was quite lucky with couple stairs being close to each other, and also falling into a pit trap (normally I wouldn't like it). Also had helmet of telepathy that shows you enemies. Necro + thunder clap ftw

Don't know if this will get seen by anyone that can fix it... BUT Rogue sneak attack does not proc with the storm chopper axe.

Game no longer loads past 96% so I've stopped playing it. The version on your site still works but isn't updated at all.

and I froze to death in the winter area because I had to spend time shooting things that were shooting me and scouting for the fire

If you REALLY want to encourage multiclassing, then maybe give all the classes the same number of hitpoints at the start? Cause its much easier for me to just use the warrior instead of start as any of the others and HOPE to find a warrior book for ONE skill I want
For now yes. Working on next game right now. Will be working a lot of the suggestions from people into the next game and at some point I'll do a Rogue Fable III that will definitely take all of the suggestions into account.

Why not calculate Best Win Time in number of moves? It is a typical feature of this kind of games that sometimes you have to think for a while about all your options.
