@Corloc: the best I can do is level 2 and that's because I found a ring that said it leveled me up. I don't know what is going on most of the time, it's just a lot of dungeon and some monsters and hard to move, and no points to upgrade my character by the time I die.

@Corloc: Please, how are you getting to level 6? It's taken forever and the best I managed to do (pure luck) was level 5 and I was killed by a hidden swarm of monsters. There's never enough food, and no matter what type of "hero" I choose, I can't get past level 3 most of the time. How could Kong put this in as part of the "Best of 2018?" This badge is going to keep me from completing the quest!

This game is pure luck on what items you get. I have tried every class and the best I can do no matter how cautious I am is level 8. All it takes is one swarm and you die.

@Bulletstopper13: Rogue is unstoppable if you can find a book with mesmerize and an axe. Use the dart and mesmerize to make large groups fall asleep and then the axe lets you crit them all in 1 hit.

@Perigirin: From the sound of it, you might have gone into and finished an optional side dungeon, backtrack until you find a room with 2 ways down and go the other path. Hope that helps, but it could just be a bug with kong's badge system.

Not much you can do when ten ranged enemies suddenly aggro on your squishy mageling. Went in with full mana, found the only cover available... still got nuked because spells don't pierce obstacles. The biggest insult was the three shamans in the pack, though. Heals AND smite for the mobs, so I couldn't just hide in cover and let them come to me one or two at a time. And before someone says I should have went for the stairs... I was WAY out of range. Other side of the map.

Wow! I just aggro-ed the entire map at once (and I don't mean opening a stone door). Had a helm of telepathy so I saw them all coming. That really shouldn't happen.

I liked infectious disease. You just can't use it if anyone has Haste or is fast, unless you have a heal potion. Barbarian needs to get the battle axe or the storm chopper. With those weapons and strafe, he is almost unstoppable.
I'll take a few more shots at Rogue using your tips.

Charge charms by wearing them. Sprint (mostly for running to stairs), nimble fingers, and reflection are super valuable. Nimble esp if you find bear traps - monsters can't see traps. Resistance seems to lower damage, not avoid it. Switching gear takes no time. Adjust freely - it can save you. * attunment - not worth it. Perfect aim pairs well with summon skeleton and charm. Necromancer, enchanter, and ranger are 3 easiest classes. Hover over something to get more info, such as crystal chests or stairs down. Always clear level before descending. You can retreat there to rest and heal. Monsters next to you went you ascend will follow. If you are being mobbed, this allows you to take them on 1-2 at a time, rather than die. Flash freeze and thunderclap are inferior substitutes for sprint. Disease will get you killed easily - avoid charm and skill, unless you have sprint, maybe. Never enchant starter weapon or projectiles.

Ok, My necromancer tried to cast infectious disease from at least 4 titles away from himself and there was no other monster near him. So HOW THE HELL DID HE GET INFECTED? WTF?

@Bulletstopper13: i relied heavily on the sleeping dart. when it was an enemy with a lot of health, i'd dart 'em, wait a few turns until the dart was ready again, smack them and shoot them with the dart again, and repeat as necessary. i think i was lucky enough to get some blinking scrolls that i saved for the end and used to just teleport over to the goblet in the last level.

Geez.. great 8-bit game, nostalgic here. My MAIN complaint, why in the hell do we lose EVERYTHING if we die and have to start all over again? This is the most frustrating part.

For anyone having trouble, don't forget to check any bookshelves you come across for frequent skill points, tomes, and other goodies.

Just finished the hard badge. It took me about 30 attempts, the trick really is to just play over and over and learn from your mistakes each time. It's fantastically frustrating to play, and now I'm kind of sad that I've done it. My one piece of advice, don't jump in a pit on level 16...

There should be something to where each time you play you can collect something that allows you to purchase permanent upgrades that last between characters

Really should have barbarian treat mana items as health items, so that mana items are not completely useless, and because barbarian really needs more healing. Playing as barbarian is the only time I run out of food.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
yeah, the barbarian is the hardest, it basically comes down to luck, because even using a super careful strat and going back to HP fountains you run out of food very early unless you stumble upon a lot of it. they actually had to edit it in the steam release to make it less difficult.

Why don't our mages have resistance their native element? Going up against fire-based enemies as a fire mage weakens your damage output, but theirs seems to stay the same.

Another tip if you are having trouble with food: Do not eat as soon as you start starving. Wait until you are at half HP. If you are about to level up, or there is a HP fountain you can use that to last even longer. As a mage always try and be at 1/2 MP as well.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
@Lordzorak If you are starving to death try to reduce the amount of time you are resting. To do that, try and use the terrain to your advantage to minimize the damage you take. Food isn't an issue when you can play without resting often.

I don't mind a game that if you die, you have to start all over. That can be a challenge. But to die because you cannot find food? If you are going to have a food aspect to it, have food available instead of maybe once every four levels. I like the game in every other way. To die to a mob is a strategy decision. To die while running around trying to find food is a poor design problem

After 126 deaths, I finally clear all characters. Stair is quite useful when there are load of enemies. Fight, got low, go up, heal and repeat. Only problem will be enemies next to you will go up too.

@Czerno Enemies do not randomly crit - they will only critical hit you if you are on unstable terrain. You can see the unstable debuff in the top left corner of your screen.
The steam version has added a lot more choices for what the character gets (more ways to get talents, more 3 crystal chest loot rooms with items). Barbarian has been buffed and can also use MP as well.

A week of trying this, and having over 20 losses... finally beat it once. But one bad swarm can make you have a really bad run. But the ranger's evasive skill is a lifesaver, especally with the speed ring (hp-30%, double move if not attacking, excellent with straffe skill)
