I suspect that some who negatively compare RF4 to RF3 aren't aware that SP gives you a free movement if you hold shift. This is extremely powerful. It makes it easier to avoid getting surrounded and to stay out of range of dangerous melee enemies, and makes (upgraded) strafe even better than it was in RF3.

The stat drop-down used to be much easier to understand, upgrade, and make sure that you were upgrading the right thing. I like the detail you've added to the characters appearance wise, but other than that, the enemies are way stronger, no matter what character class you pick it seems like the enemies have way more special abilities, like haste or their attack style being too quick for your character to dodge. It's too easy to get surrounded. Also a downgrade that you can no longer hold onto mana or health mushrooms in your inventory anymore. Clunky UI that is less user-friendly, you practically have to memorize the smorgasbord of keyboard commands before you can play. Definitely a downgrade from RF2, about to check out RF3 to see if that one fares any better than this. I appreciate the effort you put into this game, though.

Rogue Fable II is my favorite, this is a major downgrade. There are more controls than necessary. I miss the original point-and-click style of the game. It used to be only C to open character menu, from there you could click once to easily switch between weapons or projectiles to throw, and only click once on the stair tile to go up or down.

I am a BIG fan of RF2 and 3, beat the game some dozen times. Really liked some updates on this version but the necromancer in RF4 is awful. Also, I get the feeling that it's so hard to get actual cash in this version!

Downgrade from Rogue Fable 3. You do less damage, enemies do more, you have less health, enemies have more, leveling system is worse, talents only go up to level 2 meaning less effective, attribute leveling has little effect, you have less range, last boss is a fricking joke with the health, damage and mobs helping him, strafe attacking got nerfed to become useless, ... Some people may like this more, but it just feels like it was made more difficult for the sake of difficulty, rather making it a tough but "fair" challenge.

Let me expand on my thoughts, my previous comment was posted in the heat of the moment lol!
Been enjoying the Rogue Fable series for weeks now after my discovery. Highly addicting & fun games, but a lot of what I loved about RF2 & 3 didn't transfer over to this game. I loved playing fire mage in the previous games but here it seems all the mages are barely viable. Range got reduced, fire mage has pretty bad talents etc. The healing system is very unforgiving compared to previous games. Loved the shroom mechanic in RF2 & got used to the healing aspect of RF3. But here you have no shrooms to stack in the inventory nor the healing over time. In RF4 you are dependant on on-use shrooms and if you're in a tricky situation without any around you better have meat and potions.
And then there's the unbelievably difficult final boss...
RF2 & 3 were hard games but this is a different beast entirely.
Thanks for making these games tho Justin, overall very enjoyable experiences all of them!

This is such a hugely disappointing sequel in so many ways. How people have beaten this three times in a row and under 45 mins is beyond me. You have to be unbelievably looted up for the final boss to even stand a chance.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
can you use a seeded game to get medium, hard or impossible badge?
Because I managed to win under 45 min a seeded game but got neither the medium nor the impossible badge

@hlopess - have you tried duelist? Once you have the strake attacks, ability resets and ranged weapon it becomes a breeze.

addition to previous comment: seems like it doesnt always work, if goblin guard moves upright then it fails, if that pattern keeps repeating then try to change it by killing few enemies or something and then try again, when it works it usually works multiple times in a row.

seed: 96571951723. duelist only: ignore enemies and dont use sp, go 7 step down then 4 step down right then 5 step up and use scroll melee (mace+1) use another scroll ring (ring of slayer+1), this step count works only for duelist, other characters have different step counts.

seed: 95635832794. 20 speed points, finished with 1 power potion lasting all 3 yendor fights with one "power" move to spare. lol

In short, it's not typical RPG, but a game testing your luck whether your selected character run into a suitable map with the right gears.

any chance to use more than 7 abilities?
very bad logic in choosing target with auto attack
happy to see new characters, but overall it is sad to say Rouge Fable IV is no better than the previous

None of the classes are actually good, they all need skills from other classes to be viable in the mid game. Skill tomes, librarians, and such are the most important treasures you can find.

I had a very long list of complaints for each of the characters I mentioned before, but I think i can summarize it pretty easily: Ice Mage either needs more damage options, or their abilities need more CC. Necromancer's abilities scale terribly because of toxic resistance being abundant, and life spike's second tier is disappointing as all hell. Enchanter needs more mana than any other mage, but has nothing to help with that.

Knowing is half the battle:
- left click= melee attack
- right click= range attack
-besides the melee or ranged weapon type you start with, there is a placement box for the opposite weapon type.
- shift key & left click onto movement tile= move without time passing
- c key= inventory, skills, & stats
- < key= go up stairs
- > key= go down stairs
- hold z and then right-click for melee attack or left click for ranged attack= attack explosive pot

Was necromancer nerfed rlly hard? In my last run any skeleton (lvl 14) I summoned would not survive past 3 turns before being annihilated by puny wolves, leaving me vulnerable to melee attacks most of the time. I was lucky to find many INT boosting items and scrolls to enhance my toxic power build, and as soon as I step on the vault of Yendor... surprise! Toxic resistant skeletons. Toxic cloud useless, the archers outdamaged my life pike healing, and I found myself depleting my mana bar to pump out as many skeletons as I could to survive, but it got to the point where Liches spawned and revived skellies faster than I could defeat them, so I made a run for the stairs. And the next floor greets me with Haste Golems that one hit every skellie I summoned, eventually got cornered and one hit my character as well.
Maybe it was just bad RNG, or necromancer run is really that challenging now, but if anyone wants to try here is the seed: 89360412211

I mostly have fun in this game, it's a learned taste for sure but I find it to be a fair balance of randomness to make it interesting, and predictability to make it fair and reliable. HOWEVER. what the heck is going on with the rogue? level one, they are borderline absolutely useless. you have low health, a skill that will almost never find use, and a bow which has lower range than all ranged monsters. rogue in 2 and 3 made more sense because the sneak attack ability was formerly completely innate to all characters (which now requires 2 talent points to get to this point), and rogue was simply the one who utilizes it the most. The whole gameplay loop of rogue was ABOUT sneak attack and now I have to be at least level 4 in order to reach the standard. Rogue was even on the weaker side of RF3, why did it need to be nerfed into the ground?

The game doesn't really explain itself well. Do the bomb monsters do physical or fire damage? Obviously physical because my duelist with 80% fire resistance was one turn killed by two of them.
The enemy heal/summon/resurrect ability is a hair OP in my opinion. The difficulty is enjoyable until it creates impossible loops, which is fair enough for boss fights or just plain bad luck runs.
But really, most deaths are caused by 2x speed monsters (it doesn't specify speed in-game either) and overzealous healers.

For those finding this game difficult check this page out. Can be helpful for beginners. I've beaten the game 3x in a row with 6/10 characters. This little guide definitely helped me starting out. https://itch.io/t/3388918/anyone-have-optimal-skill-progression-for-the-various-classes

Naud1234 and Uroshuchicha, what both of you say seems to be the entire Rogue Fable series. Fine for killing time without expectation, but I personally haven't found any of these to be genuine fun.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
I guess this game is considered easier than Rogue Fable III because beating Rogue Fable IV only gets you a medium badge while beating Rogue Fable III gives you a hard badge. Still, this game is way too difficult to ever beat the game 3 times in a row for the hard badge.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
I think the most difficult thing about the game is the variation from the previous game. (it takes a turn to use a fountain, enemies attack/move before you move up/down a level, etc.)

@Vartiovuori If you go to the menu there is a "Controls" option where you can remap them to your liking. Hope this helps!
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
The controls suck. I should not be able to accidentally move when I'm trying to attack, or attack when I'm trying to move.

Damn... This game is hard. Died in the Ice battle against the Wizard of Yendor...
Kudos to you justin wang. This game is an great improvement over RF3. The biggest plus for me was the geatly increased variety of skill/item effects.
Keep up the good work!

the gain attribute potion being limited to only 2 randomly assigned choices seems a bit odd. Would love the choice of all three options (or just add an attribute value in the menu when using a potion)

found weird but pretty useless glitch, i dominated enemy that had heal on hit and when i died and started new game i had 60 something health but max health was normal so not real benefit.
