@Gerelys there's six CYPHERS, but only two SLOTS for them. the combinations are, 00, 01, 11, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, etc.

Actually if you had all six cypher plates you would only have a total of 43 locations that you could visit using the machine.
The math is n choose k. or n!/(n-k)!. n is the total number of choices (7 in this case or 6 plates plus no plate) and k is how many you choose ( how many slots in the machine__2__). If you do the math you will get 42, and have to add one because (0,0) is the 43rd location.

for 6 ciphers and 2 slots that would be 43:
you can have 0,0 0,1 0,2 ... 0,6 ; 1,0 1,1 1,2 ... 1,6 ; 2,0 2,1 2,2 ... 2,6 all the way to 6,6. that would make 49 options. BUT since you would only have 1 of each you would have to take away all the doubles, that would be 1,1 2,2 3,3 4,4 5,5 and 6,6. that leaves 43 options
However there might have been multiples of each such as, say, 2 of each. That would result in 4 options per slot. 4^2=16. or there could have been 2 pairs and 2 lone keys making 5 options per slot slots. 5^2=25 minus the two doubles that you cannot have: 23.
Since anything beyond doubles would be useless, the possibilities are as follows:
16, 23, 32, 43

Out of 6 ciphers we may choose 2, and order matters, so that gives us 6P2 permutations, which = 30 permutations
BUT, we may also choose just one cipher out of the 6, and place it in either the left or the right slot, so that gives us an extra (6*2) = 12 permutations
Finally, we are left with the option of having no ciphers in the 2 slots, which can only be done once, so 1 permutations.
Therefore, total permutations = 30 + 12 + 1 = 43 "combinations" from six cipher plates

I made 50 different combinations without ever even changing the first cipher. Since no cipher also counts as an entry, that leaves 5,040 possible combinations (7!).

I've been playing these games for days now. I always get stuck at a point near the end of each game and it takes me hours to progress. With most other games I would've just looked at a walkthrough, but this series is so extremely complex that it almost has the opposite effect. Makes me say "No, I'm going to finish this on my own" and then I don't feel so bad about all the escape games I've given up on in the past...

Response to the author's commentary "How many combinations?..." The amount of combinations is surprisingly simple to compute. given the equation: x*y where x is equal to the amount of options that you can choose (AKA the number of Cipher Plates) and y is equal to the amount of slots that you have (AKA how many things you can use at one time).
thus we get 7*2 (the amount of plates+the fact that we don't need to put a plate in.)*(the amount of plates we can use at once) or 14 different combinations.
This equation can also be used in any case were the order of the chooses mater and each choice can only be used once.

I had some trouble to find the bulb to put in the dark tunnel...I had to look for a walkthrough to locate it, as I was trying to put the charged one!!:D BTW I love this series.

Close, Limitlessjoker. You can't say 6*6 for both key combinations because you're counting 1-1, 2-2 and so on. It's actually '5 * 6' for both keys, '1' for the empty option, and '2 * 6' for the one key combinations. '30 + 1 + 12 = 43'. The same as '7 * 6 + 1'.

The series always entices me. It can be the art, the objectives and the outcome that always leaves us desperate to see what happens next in the later sequels as we unravel the story.

I believe there are actually 49 combinations. It seems to be 7X6 due to 6 keys and the empty option, adding one at the start, but it is more 6X6 for just keys, plus 1 for no keys and plus 2X6 for the one key options

Geez, I took forever just to get started in the root because you have to click on this tiny piece next to the obvious plug. Why? Why not just let me pull the plug? Other than that, I really liked this one. Please put in an option to turn off all sound.

Wait, so when you blow open the brick wall with the steam pipe, it takes you into the lighthouse basement from submachine 2? crazy. But the wisdom gem wasn't there during that game... 0_o This series is full of mysteries

hardest part was finding the light bulb, I duidnt know you could pick one up from the rooms you port to, placing the metal cyphers in that machine on 552, and activating the electricity by unhooking it at the entrance =_= tiny lil hitboxes

hi I played it again, I like this one but hobel might be right about secret locations being difficult to find, there are many pillars that you can't look behind so eventually you don't bother clicking behind them, also there are 6 keys but no keys counts as a position, so it is 7 times 7

worst part of the series, that i played so far. the hitboxes to do something are way to small to find, too many puzzles are not intuitive so you end up trying everything with everything. when placing the fuses you have to go to every location to find the spot where it changed something. and i also got the freeze bug when looking at the note in the secret location. 2/5 sry, i hope submachine 6 is better again :)

what an atmospheric and complete game. its very detailed and well thought out. lots of atmosphere. very spooky. a little complex though :)

This is the first time in this series I haven't been able to make any significant progress. Bummer for me, I guess. Stuck with the first three locations (given to me) and one item I found.
