Nice game, but a little frustrating and repetitive with enemies going straight for the gate instead of you, having to click each individual target you want to swing a sword at because none of them go for you, and going through only getting 1 new ability each night with no one to upgrade them to your own preferences.

I actually found the mechanics and everything to be very, very entertaining. I honestly think with some tweeks to the next game like this, like make it more like an adventure game, include more classic RPG elements (level ups with stat points, different abilities/trees available from leveling up) and perhaps the ability to collect/equip items, I feel like it could end up being really good since the way everything works here makes it fun/not overly cumbersome to control the character and it just 'feels' right. Plus if you included missions there could still be quests where you had to defend castles, so the entire defense thing could still be included but it would be expanded on as part of a more adventure...ish game. I really think it could end up being quite great.

For those having trouble, use your skills to best effect. In early levels charge from one side of the gate to the other to clear out breakers. Use lightning to stun siege weps or take out reapers. I mostly reserved stomp for breakers since they seem to be the only ones to be one-hit by it. Traps are your friends, lay them any time you can if you are within cast range of the gate. If you pause you should be able to lay them where an enemy is about to step. Of course, fireball is just as good and a bit easier to use. The cast with the arc area of effect doesn't have much use except against breakers, but stun a group with them then follow up with another skill like charge that wouldn't normally kill them completely and maybe you'll see some results. Don't get too far from the wall unless there are siege weapons, try to set up traps at the wall before you attack them. Upgrade early, especially your weapon!

The story in this game is fantastic. I have as much enjoyment off the field as I do in it. If I could fight along side some actual soldiers the fighting would be more strategic instead of ruthless hacking.

Very fun game, tho I think it needs to be optimized a bit more. I have a very fast computer and the game froze for couple of seconds when I used all my abilities when there were about 50~ enemies on screen.

Is it me? Or is it that you are taking on THOUSANDS of men, dog, and siege equipment by yourself and all your allies can do is fire arrows once a day?

@fual222 That would be cool but you have to remember... the people you fight in the very first level are capable of defeating your friends with ease.

Nice storlyine and great cut-scenes. Some developers underestimate the value of this in a RPG, thankfully you have not.
One very big flaw that I think is that you can't see the description of skills after you get them for the first time. Its not like you remember every skill detail and its order.

This game has the potential to be much better. The storyline and attention to detail is great. However the game needs a much more graceful solution to the battle mechanics. Having to fend off mobs with limited resources makes the game very frustrating to play.

good graphics, nice background music, got a bit of romance hidden in between levels, and dude that was the most awesome credits ever! Its not total crap like most of the other stuff where its a really really long list with nothing to keep you focused.

The best part about the game is the effect the siege has on the people inside. It gives the whole place an atmosphere I haven't found in any other game, not on Kongregate or in the shelves at the gamestore. 5/5

One thing I do thoroughly enjoy about this game is how it makes you out to be what you are: the ultimate badass. You're a one man army, taking down hundreds of soldiers at a time, breaking war machines with nothing but your sword. You SHOULD be regarded with awe, but a lot of games have NPCs behave as though you're nothing but another cog in the machine, or worse, a disreputable underling.

On the one hand, I sympathize with those people who are complaining about the lack of automated defenses: the storyline itself seems to suggest that, within a few weeks' time, there ought to be a number of archers firing from the wall. The one-hit barrage doesn't really do that justice. On the other hand, it's an absolutely excellent game, with a great story, fantastic detail, even a touch of humor, and the people who are complaining about "no wall-archers" would probably be the same ones saying "the wall-archers are stupid; they don't target properly" if they were there.

What the hell, has anyone else noticed that he's neither right nor left handed? Every time i turn him, it seems like he's holding the sword in the other hand.

Question: I played the hero as a nice guy, since that is what I always do, being tolerant, encouraging him and accepting her way of life. But I wonder how the story would have evolved if I had reacted differently towards Elvina and Denny? I wish there were a Wiki where I could look up such things :) Can anyone of you tell me?

Ortus is gonna be the best thing that has happened to Armor Games and hopefully to Kongregate too. Thank you Elvidian Entertainment! :D

nice game, the ability to pause and think or cast a spell makes up for the constant announcements of 'they`re attacking the gate!' I`d suggest different music. The game is very entertaining, but with a few minor tweaks here and there, it could be better

This game has promise, but allow me to offer my opinion for the sake of future development. The music and voice acting is good, but the style of the art does not match the style of the music. The art has a "cheap" feel in comparison to the otherwise epic nature of the story, music, and hero-ness. The game mechanics themselves are stilted when they should be smooth. Turning the character looks like rotating a mannequin and his arm comes down like an automaton rather than a fluid strike. The spells are satisfying and their art is compelling. The overall enjoyment of the game is moderate. I feel like I want either more action or more strategy but the game sort of sits in the middle of both styles of game play. Maybe that's what you're going for but it's not convincing enough. Overall, I think you have a really nice game here but it could be much better if more thought was put into the art and the game mechanics. Keep it up!

I is a very nice game, but the thing i don't get is there are a bunch of people in the camp with swords that don't fight, all they do is watch me and it's like hello i'm right here can I have some assistance?!
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
Loved it. I kind of wish it was a bit longer. It was interesting and i actually got attached to the NPCs for some reason. I wonder if Ortus will be like this or will be going on the offensive against the empire. This had what I like in a game a story...

Definitely needs some element of defensive attackers; what the heck are they doing inside the keep while I'm out here defending them? Sure, there's an 'Arrow Storm' sort of attack, but I'd rather they were firing those arrows with a little more discrimination. Perhaps as you upgrade the walls you add some archers who will actively help you defend against enemies at the gates?

Wow, i think the game could use a few minor changes but overall this game is pretty sweet, 4 out of 5 in my book only because the "real" game isnt out yet. when it does, ill revise it to a 5/5. but yeah i would say alot more but people already have spoken about the finer points. good job with this game.
