I don't know why there are so many "this is easy"-comments. I keep dying around 100 years in. I like the concept, but I wish I had more control over what happens. I'd like to send my dragons on raids myself. Maybe there could be some extra events like "there was a heavy storm that forced your dragon to return to its lair" or so. I think dealing with inbreeding would also be nice ... not like forbidding it completely, but adding a stat penalty that gets exponentially increased by the grade of inbreeding. But I think for that it should be easier to buy eggs (get the mony to buy eggs) or maybe "rent" a male dragon to mate with one of you female ones (like with breeding horses).

Very much enjoy the game. Don't know if an improved version is still being considered, but I'd love to see and play one if that's still in the plans. Got to year 700 something after quite a few bad starts. took a bit to get the hang of how it works, but once I got it, it became pretty second nature.

Magus Draconus: The Art of Dragon Breeding doesn't know how to explain itself.
Visuals: Nope. This is paint and even for paint it looks bad.
Audio: Funny I guess. Does definitely not fit.
Story: Which story?
Controls: Click though menus. It works.
Gameplay: ???!!!???
Rated L for Low hanging fruit.

it's a pity the dev went left and hasn;t been back to work on this, it's got potential. i mean there's definitely some adjusting and some improvements to the art (lol those dragons...) that could be done, but considering it was done in 48 hours i think he did a fantastic job i honestly hope he comes back sometime and sees this, im no master artist but i'd be happy to offer some slight improvements to the art anyway. and for such a simple game i've spent several hours working on breeding my beasts up to epic proportions. fun times to be had ^.^

this game is dumb. No instructions to speak of- doesn't tell you how long you have to wait to try to breed again, how to increase breeding odds (I had zero success, then my female died, no female eggs in the 2 I was able to buy from thieves guild) no explanation of how to earn gold... this is just dumb. 2 thumbs down.

year 312 already...
Fun easy game!
It would be cool if you could make the other team surrender or be in their position.

It was fun the first couple of times, but after a while it sort of stalled. Conscripts ended up being like the highest thing, with an sergeant every 20 years or so. After my bred dragons ended up better stated then the bahamut, i got really bored, since there wasn't really any other goal. I quit playing after year 780.

I think that the #1 thing to take care of is (no offense) artwork. The gameplay is ok, but it shouldn't be too hard to improve the design. Maybe asking a friend to help you, or even just playing around with tools in paint. Paint Tool SAI is quite useful too.

Awesome, I enjoyed the concept the starting first four times I played was annoying. However, after a few trails I finally got through it. I, of course, didn't have a clue what I was doing, but I'm owning these bitches now. B)
SO, what I'd want is a restart button, more events would be cool(Something to perk interests), More than this small township(Expansion, so to say, would be awesome.), Possibly competition after expansion, another idea to suggest is a shop for the mage. I hope to see fun times ahead!

Maybe I'm being stupid, but I don't understand it. After the first egg hatches, I can neither breed nor buy another. There aren't instructions. I mean, c'mon, even kids come with a manuel, right?

Year 952, Summer: Accidental removal of best and only male. Other then having dread in the 120+, I can't remember what his other stat were ... though the two females I still have have stats like this- Might:53, Assault: 35,39, Dread: 97,113, Eggs: 40,44, Scales: 32,34, Rage: 4, Glacius: 3, Bloodlust: 2,9

Got bored at year 604. This is no joke. I really got to it. It would be nice if their was more room for dragons and better graphics. Other than that it was awesome!

Okay. So I finally got the hang of surviving.
1) Limit yourself to 2 adult dragons at once, male and female, until you start breaching into 10s.
2) Focus exclusively on the first 3 stats until you have 10's in all 3.
2.5)Get very lucky.
3)Do whatever you want as long as you keep first 3 stats above 10.
This works because of how the villagers upgrade. If your dragons don't wipe them out, they get much stronger, so a single weak dragon attacking them makes it much harder for the rest of your dragons. But, as long as they're wiped every attack in either direction, they never become a threat.

I must be missing something. The only thing I can really do is mate dragons or buy them from the thieves guild right? They raid automatically, and there's nothing I can do to speed it up? I only ask because I can't ever seem to raise dragons faster than their retaliation builds up, then I lose a dragon every 3 - 4 turns and die off.

Actually I enjoyed the simplistic graphics and all my only problem is it seems a bit buggy BUT it was made for the ludum dare contest :P. Like being able to breed multiple eggs at once, more control over stats, make the tower come into play, countdown for hatching and movement into "adult/breeding capability" etc
Thanks! The late/end-game is definitely on my radar for the post-combo version. Balancing is tough work, and in the time limits I only managed to focus on the early and mid-game. Any thoughts on the late/end-game you may want to share are appreciated!

This might just be my game, but i can only breed once and then it stops working. Even if i change seasons I still can only click on a dragon once its like the game has stopped working for me. Seems like a great game I just really wan to play it.
Do you have any more information? Does the problem stay even if you refresh the page? Does it keep displaying the breeding instructions? I'm actually allowed to fix bugs per the rules of Ludum Dare (I'm pretty sure), so if you can help me track it down I'll see what I can do!

Well.. if you really are going to keep working on this it might be really good.
It would be great if...
- player could pick what kind of dragons will he start with, which would place him on map.
- there could be multiple cities
- player was allowed to attack, breed or interact might be fun too
- the kinds of dragons were more clearly divided
- you added more random events
Possibly you could devise multiple story-lines depending on game style
well those are just some suggestions... of course I don't know where you want to go with your game... I just wrote some things I like in games ... hope you find it useful in some way

Disregard commentary from the totally obliivious, the concept, the transition, the development itself are NOT bad all things considered. As far as an idea I have not yet seen, perhaps side quests or missions to send the dragons, or perhaps additional young dragon/eggs slots.
Thanks. I like the idea of the dragons doing more things than raiding and defending, but I'm not positive it'll make it in. An 'egg inventory' is one of the ideas I'm already considering for inclusion.

I hope to see you develop this further after the contest ends. I don't think a lot of players understand the Ludum Dare constraints and I wish Kongregate would shed a little light on the origin of the games we are submitting. Lumping them in with other games and not at least giving us a [LD] logo or identity is pretty much tossing these games to the wolves. It's nice to see my game try and hold it's own against other games developed over months (years?) but at the same time I'd like an honest rating given the circumstances of creating the game in a weekend.
I plan to release a post-compo version, with proper graphics and sound and about a weeks worth of new features, balancing, and UI improvements. Any suggestions for that version are absolutely welcome! It's true that it surprised me to be compared with non-Jam games, and the negativity stemming from that, but on the other hand the fact that I've nearly hit 2 stars with 2 days work under that criteria is actually better than I would've expected. And that means I only need to put in 5 days work for a 5 star game, that's how this should work, right? Heh.

alot depends on luck today i need like at year 107 with con 5 ser 20, cap 22, kni 14, her 23 and dra101 troops 185/185 realiation 97/100 not bad for having 6 dragons i know i'm not breeding fast enough when my best egg was at stat 7 and 6 for male and females i think the cheap 200 gold egg should have better stats than the first 2 dragons we start out with or defeating lords gives more gold only had 3 lesser eggs in that one might mail when i get killed off tho

suggestions might be changing the leader class every time one is killed off, i got lucky and killed only conscripts one game and had a hard time with hero in another time, balancing out how strong they are based on stats with easy its boring making best dragon egg every 300 years or so, i think hero needs more better dragons to deal with, either its too easy or to hard also, if possible get rid of imbreeding once u have male and female with great stats its easy to make great eggs and then replace bad dragons with better ones, also maybe limited life span like 200 to 400 years old
The leader is actually the highest ranked soldier in the city. So as the troops gain experience, the leaders become more dangerous. If you fought only conscripts in a game you must've been constantly killing all the troops so none of them could level up into Sergeants. Also, you're the first person I know of to get past year 100, so you're either very lucky or very good at the game. Congratulations! Prohibiting in-breeding (at least among direct relations) is something that will probably be in the next version.

While we don't want to wander into Lamarckian genetics, being able to improve existing dragon stats to keep up with the constant growth of the strength of the towns people (while leaving the base, breeding stats alone and with their own displayed values) might go a long way towards improving survivability later on, and if you have any control over that growth (say, in terms of potential points that you choose to spend), it would give a lot more control to the player. I think a lot of people might well be frustrated over how you're basically rolling two dice over and over again with almost no player input.

A little bit more interaction couldn't hurt. If an egg is hatching or a baby dragon's growing up, there's nothing else to do but to click "Next season". Maybe being able to pit your dragons against each other to train them (but while having the risk of them getting injured) would be good. One thing per month you can do'd still remain, and the times you're waiting for eggs to hatch / hatchlings to grow up, aren't entirely wasted.
Yeah, I would've loved to have been able to do something like that. Out of the 48 hours for the contest, I spent around 16 sleeping, 5 coming up with the basic concept and gameplay ideas, 15 programming it, 10 tweaking the fine details of the gameplay to try to balance it, and about 30 minutes making art assets. And then I was pretty much out of time and had to submit it. I have an artistic friend working on quality art and another composing music--when the competition is over, I'll be spending about a week or so polishing up the design and adding new features like that before releasing an improved version. Any suggestions for that version are definitely appreciated.

I felt like a real dragon breeder! I liked encouraging my scaly friends to give it their all when getting me my loot! Thank you for this wonderful experience. 1/5
