I've heard you all on the desire for a kanji version of the game! I'm collaborating with my Japanese teacher and will do more research to hopefully release a kanji version of the game (which will also teach you words and stuff). It will likely take a long time, and there's no promise that it will be released, but I will definitely try my best!
Well, as long as you continue to come back every half a day and post this comment over and over, that's more play count for me, so I don't really mind it.

one thing that i would love to see is a way to kinda decide for example that a certain character wont show up before i have passed x characters (in free play) for example i would like my free play to start with 10 characters but when i have passed lets say 30 of those 10 new characters will get added to the random pool of available characters

Is there a way we can play this on a different website? I would love to be able to share this with my classmates but the Australian government forces public schools to use filters D:
Hi, I'm glad to hear that you're interested in this game and would love to share it with your classmates! Unfortunately, this game is exclusive to Kongregate (at least for now) so you cannot play it on a different website. But I guess it should always be possible to play this at home :P

Tukkun? Think I know this guy from somewhere... why don't you try to do an idle game as your next project? No... even better do an anti-idle game \o/

It pretty interesting, I like the way you set this up and also made it for school, very cool, I always wounder about Chinese Letters

This is painfully easy considering I'm nearly as good at hiragana as I am at the roman alphabet. But the Katakana I can still learn.

Great game! I have recently started a Japanese course and am finding this extremely helpful!
A suggestion, though: Your 'enemy' generation routine seems to just be spawning following a random() call, which is ending up generating lots of few characters and a few of the others. For example, I just did Level 9 and got only two Ha and 3 Ho. A small change would be to instead generate a list with (for example) 5 of each and then shuffle them, so as to maintain a fair amount of all kanas. Im not sure if further on when there are more characters if it'll make much of a difference, but it certainly helps in the beginner levels when we are learning the consonant sounds.
5/5
Actually it's not entirely random - there's some extra code to make it so that it rerolls if the same character appears twice in a row, therefore reducing the chance that the same character appears multiple times in a row.

If you ever wanted to further develop this project, I think it would be amazing if, when you shoot the symbol, the person says "ku!" or "sa!" (for example) to help learn pronunciation. Great learning tool and certainly helps in remembering the characters.

This is a cool project and somehow reminds me of clockworks. You should check this game, maybe it can provide you additional ideas. However I believe it is more effective to learn kana and languages by drawing the kana itself, not by just repeating. I found it hard to memorize all the kana.

I love it. It's a sweet game. I'm trying to learn Japanese and thinking of doing Hiragana and Katakana first. This game will be one of my learning points! Thank you.

It seems a little unfair that if I can't type a character fast enough in free mode my mastery will immediately go to 0
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
Can we get an actual pronunciation of the characters? For example, I don't know if "i" sounds like "ee" or "ih". My best guess is "ee", but I won't know without looking everything up.

always wanted to learn that shit in the "not so boring way". and now not only i learn, but in addition i get exp for that! 5/5 and favorited

I tried to learn reading Japanese characters many times and it never really worked, but I feel like this game is really helping, I'm "playing" little by little everyday and repeating stages and I feel I'm slowly recognizing characters naturally. Great work and thanks for sharing this project on kong :)

To Tukkun (from your reply): I didn't use any third-party program, it's probably the browser and/or memory, the same as typing this comment.

My save disappeared. Sometimes it saves, sometimes everything is lost and I have to start completely over. This is in version 3.06.
Hi, have you tried changing the font in the main menu yet? The "n" and "h" in the default font are somewhat similar, so maybe YOU are confusing them, not the game.

I must say, this is an incredible game! It's really helping me to learn the Japanese characters when nothing else was working!! :D Love it hyaku%

A speed option would be nice, a type a little too fast for the slow scroll speed. Also if you turn the heads of the enemies around, we're being attacked by Duck swordsman. 5/5

I already know hiragana, so it's a bit of a grind to go through the adventure mode's first half just to get to katakana. Free play is there at any time however, so it's fine. 5/5 and d. Very helpful game!

これは素晴らしいゲームです 5/5. It is nice to see educational games on Kong. One minor nitpick I have is that hearing the pronounciation might be helpful for beginners. Incorporating vocabulary would also be interesting, for example seeing the word 'love' and having to type in 'ai' in kana or vice versa. Even if you're planning on making a Kanji game, this kind of thing would probably be easy to implement. Keep up the good work and thanks once again :D

This is a really good game actually. You should feel proud knowing that you've probably helped a bunch of people learn kana xD The only problem I have is that the 'n' looks too similar to 'h'. At one point I did manage to mistake them and input the wrong answer. Though to be honest it could just be me. Also it would be neat if there two 'adventure' modes. one for each hiragana and katakana. So that we could go straight to katakana if we wanted to instead of having to go through the first 25 levels

Can someone send me a link where I can find that Character List so I can print it... I tried to find it on Google but it's not nearly as good as here...

Am I the only one who has terrible lag? Gam freezes for a second or two and when it unfreezes ninjas are too close to react :(
Are you using a low-end computer? Opening too many other programs? Switching to low quality, disabling background? Zooming out your browser? Have you tried refreshing?

Hey! Just a small problem, I stopped at level 4 yesterday and used "CCleaner" to clean my computer and it took away the cookies so now I'm back at level 1. If you could, it'd be useful to make sure it stays maintained! I'd feel bad for people at the higher levels.
Hi, it has always been well known that CCleaner at its default configurations will wipe out Flash games' savefiles. You should be more careful in the future when using such programs, and it is strongly advised that you back up your data (search for a file called kanaW.sol in the folder chat.kongregate.com, that is your Kana Warrior savefile). Unfortunately, this is not a problem I can resolve and there's nothing I can do about it. Well, maybe I can restore your savefile but since you were only level 4 it's not really worth the effort.

Level 40 and onwards is impossible...and the difficulty has little to do with getting the words right, more to do with the laser moving up and down and the number of tiles
Well... perhaps you need more practice on your Hiragana and Katakana? I have played through the game myself to confirm that it is not impossible, and someone has even perfected all the stages. Based on your statistics I can tell that although you have cleared 39 stages your scores are relatively low, so maybe you should go back to previous stages to get more practice? :P Remember that although it's great to be able to get the words (technically they aren't words) right, speed is very important too.

Heya! I've been working on my Japanese for a little while now, and this is a great way to learn! If I had one point of criticism so far, it's the fact that we don't have to ace a level before moving on to the next one.
As completionist as this may sound, I think it's important that we know certain characters before moving on to learning new ones. It's important to learn things bit by bit.
But other than that, this is great!
You actually get only 10 lives on each level, so you would still need to know previous characters to a certain extent. Plus, there are occasional "review" levels where characters from previous levels appear. Since this is just a game I tried to make it more lenient so everyone can enjoy it, but if you feel that you MUST get 100.0 on a level before moving on to the next, nothing stops you from doing it! (Even if you are good at the language, getting 100.0 on some of the later levels can still prove to be difficult)
