I think this would feel more satisfying if the laser fired when you hit the final letter of the mora, instead of having to hit return all the time. Maybe you could also get a Japanese speaker to pronounce all the characters for you and incorporate that into the game somehow, even if it's just being able to click on the characters and hear the pronunciations at the screen you see before the rounds start. Very cool to see a game like this on Kong :).

this would have been really helpful my first semester of Japanese in college. Now, in my second semester this is rather remedial (saying this without going through the entire game, maybe it starts throwing in kanji later but otherwise its too easy for me) still I like the idea this game has, just a little too late for me.

ahh, nevermind, it's the combo ones. I probably would have learned that in adventure mode, but I figured it'd be okay to skip because I only need a little review :/
a tutorial beforehand could be helpful.

what is it with the free mode? I'm typing the right characters but it's all misses, is it something to do with those swords?

For Japanese people this game will be such a boring terrible piece of game lol XD
Love it btw. Killing two bird with one stone.

You could make this game ten times better by saying something like "you were killed by 'cho' (チョ)" when you die. It's kind of useful for practice, but it sucks having to look up the ones you couldn't remember all the time.
Hi, thank you for the suggestion! Actually, you can roll over the level icon in the top left corner to see the recent characters that killed you or characters that you got a mistake on.

Actually the game became impossible once i hit stage three. once i had to press multiple letters the lag on key entry is so bad the enemy reaches me before it registers.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
This is a very cool concept, but i am getting horrid lag while playing. about halfway through a level my key stokes take a second or two to register. sometimes i have to press the key a few times to register.
Are you using a low-end computer? You should try changing graphic quality to low and disabling background (in the top right corner of the game) and zooming out your browser. You should also try closing unnecessary programs. It could also be the case that you are using a third party program allowing you to type in a non-English language, which would interfere with the game.

Any chance of doing one for vocabulary (in kana primarily, but maybe kanji too)? I'm trying to learn the N5 list, but finding it quite hard.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
while other country have only use 26 character of alphabet, japanese use those 214 basic character, plus 26 english alphabet, plus gazilion number of kanji word, no wonder most of them really smart.. 5/5

That's a great game. Putting game in education is the very best idea. Maybe we wpn't have to face exams. Just clearing a game can be enough. I was thinking to make my lessons a game. with imagınatıon and sounds ıt can be easıer to learn somethıng. But unfortunately i don't know how to write games. And lastly; thank you very much! I learned some Japaneese for 2 semı-years. And I dıdnt use them. I memorızed Hıragana and Katakana, and ı was about to forget them.

Had you made the game showing different objects and correlating them according to their image. Example: showing a bus and having to type bus.
plus you don't announce the word that im learning.
Its partly educational. It can be better
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
too easy to play lol ;P itd be cool if you could customize your character or something atleast. Costumes like Mini-Moni and stuff lol

Add fast-forward button(shift key or something) plz? I've already known some easy hiraganas(like a, ro, shi) and want to play later levels. So I want to skip the first few levels(which are boring).

I'm sitting here giggling at myself and my lack of kana knowledge... Makes me thankful there's something like this here.

One of my biggest problems is distinguishing your "n's" as N and not H. The font you're using makes the beginning higher than I'm expecting so I'm looking for は when I need to be looking for な, for an example.

if you make it so that when destroying a target makes a specific sound depending on what is written on it it can help people audio memorize it. it might help them memorize it, so they can associate the sounds with the letters

Already love this, I want to learn Japanese and I can't focus on the kana long enough normally. Thank you so much for putting this on Kongregate!

Nice game for learning Japanese letter. It's great as educational game hehe. One question is any plans to add words with 2~3 letter. Some simple word(such as アイス(A-i-su which means ice), バス(Ba-su which means bus) ) might be good for learning japanese imo. Anyway, 5/5 for this game and 9001/5 for potentiality. Good luck. (/me goes hunt CHAOS >_>)

I wish I had this game when I was first learning! But it's still a fun way to review and get faster :) Thanks so much for this! 5/5

I think my cat is working for the ka ki ku ke ko warriors. He tackled me right towards the end of that stage! @.@;
Great game! I love educational toys, and I'd been thinking recently that I ought to brush up on my hiragana (the class I was in never got to katakana). Thank you so much for sharing this! ^_^
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
i really like the idea of the game and it helps a lot to recognize all the hiragana so thank you very much for making this awesome game
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
This game is awesome. There should be a companion game that does the same thing for common kanji, if you get a chance :D Good work
I would definitely implement Kanji if I had an idea how to do it! I mean, just making the player type one reading for each Kanji might not be enough for learning, making the player remember every single reading of a Kanji can be tedious, and there isn't even a definite list of Kanji readings! The version that I made for my school project actually had Kanji in it, but due to many reasons I decided to remove them from the Kongregate version.

I have been trying to figure out a fun and entertaining way to learn Kana. I need it to play Pokemon Green for the original gameboy. It's all in Japanese. This game can really help me to finally learn how to read the dialogue in the game and finally start to understand it. Thank you for creating this amazing game.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
what a great idea. i must confess that I was always trying some way to learn japanese, and I've never thought trying that in a Kong game.

Tukkun I really loved Anti Idle and just wanted to say it's awesome that you're using your skills to develop fun and educational games like this. Keep it up man

☆☆☆☆★
This game made me want to learn a new language!
But there could be more to this so I can't give away that last star, sorry.
Anyway, heed these words: This project of yours can go places I don't think you currently realize it can.

I'd love a pronunciation guide. I'm looking up pronunciations and saying them as I play. Be perfect if they were in game. Thanks tho for an incredible incredible and useful game
I wish I could do this! Unfortunately, it turned out to be too difficult to find some free voices that I can use on the Internet, and I am not ready to hear some copyright complaints (and I don't have the tools to record my own voices). So... yeah. Maybe you will have to resort to external pronunciation guides.
