Where can I get more help?

I can't launch StencylWorks.

In very rare cases, StencylWorks may not launch at all. Often, this is due to the absence of Java.

Although the installer will install Java if it's missing, for whatever reason, Java may be unavailable (e.g. you uninstalled it) or out of date. To install Java, click here.

If Java is installed and up to date, we recommend seeking help on the Stencyl forums or the Kongregate forums. Be as specific as possible when seeking help!

StencylWorks doesn't let me sign in.

You need to sign up for a free Stencyl account (not your Kongregate account!) to sign in to StencylWorks and gain access to our forums, StencylForge and other services. You can do this from within StencylWorks or from our site.

This only needs to be done once. StencylWorks will remember your password and automatically sign you in each time.

If you already have an account and forgot your password, request a new one.

General Questions

What platforms is StencylWorks for?

Mac, Windows and most flavors of Linux.

Can I export iOS and Android games? HTML5 games?

Our iOS exporter is currently in a private beta. We have plans to export to Android and other mobile devices but have nothing specific to announce at this time. The same can be said for HTML5 games.

Is StencylWorks free or does it cost money?

Creating Flash games is free with no strings attached.

We are working on exporters for mobile devices such as iPhone. For those, we are considering a subscription model.

Are there different versions of StencylWorks? (Flash, iOS, etc.)?

At this time, there's just one version of StencylWorks. We are privately beta testing an iOS exporter. When this launches, it will be an addon to the product rather than a separate application.

How do I publish games to Kongregate?

Export your game as a SWF.

Then, publish to Kongregate like you would any normal game.

Do I have to publish my game to Kongregate?

No, you're free to publish your game anywhere you'd like, including other portals or a personal website. Games are not locked to a single site.

The Nitty Gritty

Do I need to know ActionScript?

Absolutely not. You can use it, but the vast majority of our users prefer to use our visual tools to build their game's behaviors.

What if I want to use ActionScript instead of the visual designer?

You can use ActionScript 3 via a built-in code editor or an external editor.

Are there any game graphics or sounds available with StencylWorks?

Yes! Through StencylForge, our "marketplace for game resources", you can browse an extensive collection of royalty-free game graphics and sounds for your games.

What image format do I use with StencylWorks?

Any raster format will do - PNG, JPG, and GIF. We even support animated GIF's. We don't support vector art to a satisfactory degree. It will import, but it will be converted to raster form.

What kind of audio files can I use?

Simply put - it's the same as what Flash itself supports - MP3's.

What is the difference between Stencyl and StencylWorks?

Stencyl is the name of our company and of the overall platform. StencylWorks is the actual toolset. Occasionally, we use the two interchangeably, and in such cases, we're usually talking about StencylWorks.

Can I make ___ ?

Is there multiplayer support?

StencylWorks may officially support for building real-time and turn-based multiplayer games in the future.

Can I make a 3D game?

StencylWorks does not officially support 3D games, although pseudo-3D and isometric games have been built.

Can I make isometric games?

StencylWorks does not officially support isometric games yet but may in the future. Clever users have figured out how to make them.

Are there any limits or restrictions on what I can make?

There are no limits (e.g. file size) or restrictions on what you can create with StencylWorks. Your only limit is your imagination!

What about making fangames?

Fan games are a legal gray area. Some companies endorse them. Some vigorously go after them.

Ultimately, what our users create with StencylWorks isn't our business, and we're not liable for what's created with our software. It's up to the sites hosting the games to decide what the right thing to do is.
