About me

40% of gamers are female, according to the ESA’s numbers, and they play for an average of 7.4 hours a week versus 7.6 hours for male gamers. And only 54% of purchases are made by men. So where are all the good games for women?

The way I rank games goes like this
1/5 = discriminatory or offensive ie “girl games” “rescue teh princess*” etc, or just really poor in general
2/5 = poor but has redeeming factors
3/5 = bland, same-ish OR good gameplay but poor controls or obnoxious graphics
4/5 = pretty good, I had a lot of fun
5/5 = I played this for hours and hours OR really good short game that I would have played for hours if there had been hours of game to play OR pixelly art + good story/interactive fiction style. I’ll generally not rate games in genres that I don’t tend to like, unless I find one surprisingly good.

.* Look: if you can replace your ‘rescue teh princess’ plot with a ‘quest for the epic treasure’ or ‘defeat the evil bad person’ without changing anything except your intro and your ending, then you don’t need it. Some people only need to leave it out of the game’s description for crying out loud. I mean even TV Tropes is reporting this trope as having died a long time ago in games. Why haven’t flash games kept up?

When you go to the store, sometimes you buy a flavour of chips that you don’t really like, because man do you want some chips right now. But would you go to a store and expect to find they always only have that flavour you don’t like? That’s how I feel about games sometimes.

Interesting, isn’t it, the way some people clamour for a sequel, but others just clamour for badges (and then inevitably whine that some badges are too hard, or that a game they don’t like has badges…)

Yeah, but I only like the 2d versions of metroid, so this suits me just fine :)

I love the 2-d metroid games also, but I really liked metroid prime hunters for ds. It’s not like the others though (less puzzle, more shooter).

Yep. All games that have a high score tab have implemented the API, while not all games that have implemented the API have high score tabs.
