The darkness outside.
A short story by Alexander Carroll

PROLOGUE :The deafening sound of screams nearly ruptured my ear drums as the dark swirling cloud of blackness surrounded the bus, and made terrible screams that sounded like a banshee. The people around me had blood pouring out of their ears after their ear drums erupted. I ran down the bus lane handing out ear plugs as we quickly covered our ears from the shrill screams of the black swirling cloud. Suddenly…the bus began to tear apart as the roof flew off, and the swirling cloud came closer and I screamed in fear and yelled “get to the middle of the bus”! as the rest of the bus tore away and we were all sucked into the swirling abyss.

Part 1:The first day.
I opened the windows of my house in Orlando FL and sighed at the rays of light coming in. I headed down stairs for morning breakfast, after feeding my pet lizards who lived in my room. I made myself a bowl of cereal without milk and sat down in front of the T.V.. I flipped the news on as the newscaster spoke, “Last night several more mysterious disappearances have occurred and have left no trace.” I turned the T.V. off and sighed once agin, this has kept happening for almost a month now and no one has found out who is doing it…and there is never anything for the cops to go for. I worry about my own safety at these times when my own friends could be kidnapped and I couldn’t do anything about it. Eventually I got up and put my work clothes on and headed to the office as a journalist.

Part 2:A strange day at the office.
As I walked into the office half-awake I hardly noticed that our secretary who greets me everyday I walk in wasn’t there and she is never sick…and I doubt she would skip work on the bosses birthday. I pressed the button to the elevator and walked inside. It was empty which surprised me a bit because it’s rare when the elevator is empty at all, but I quickly disregarded it as chance and pressed the 4 button as I shot up to the 4th floor of the office. When I got to the 4th floor the door opened to an empty office….paper was still there half written, coffee was still warm on people’s desk and cake uneaten. As I turned the corner I heard a shrill scream as one of my co-workers John came barreling at me. I quickly side stepped out of his way and watched as he went flying out the window in shock. I looked back around the corner to see the rest of my co-workers charging at me and I yelled “STOP!” but they kept coming, not paying attention to what I said. I began to run for the elevator, smashing coffee cups and toppling stacks of paper as I launched myself into it and slammed the 10th floor button.

Part 3:The survivors
Ding the elevator door opened to a shotgun to my face and I stumbled back in fear and said “DON’T SHOOT!”. The shotgun was lowered and my best friend Logan was behind it . He said “sorry” and began giving an explanation of what was going on. He said the boss was dead, and only him and the handful that could make it got here, and they are now holding up the fort. They were shooting any of the once-human workers who we called our “Friends”, who came charging up. Apparently a few hours ago this black goo began to fill up our water coolers, and whoever drank it became psychotic and attempted to force the water down the other people’s throats. Those who resisted…were killed and turned into little flesh puppets, surrounded by some odd energy. That was what happened to the co-workers who attempted to attack me, and John was one of the many people who jumped out of the window, rather than be killed by the psychos and turned into a flesh puppet. Ever since they have been holding up here taking out all that come, and they grabbed as much food and untainted water as possible. As night began to fall after a long time of panic, we all began to fall asleep. Some of us were on a defence shift, while the rest fell asleep. I sat down in my sleeping bag that we always kept in storage, after one party when we all fell asleep on the floor, and I fell into a deep sleep until morning.

Part 4: Rude awakening.

I opened my eyes to the site of blood and gore all around me.The room was partly on fire from what seemed to be a long fire fight,bullets sprayed into the wall’s and bloody axes litter the floor,some with body parts still attached to them.My nose wrinkled with the stench of death and decay as I got up to a horrifying sight,body’s littered the floor blood everywhere gun wounds in some and axe blows in others.I carefully climbed out of the sleeping bag almost about to vomit from the horrific site of blood and gore,I quickly grabbed a bloody axe that lay next to me to protect from the attackers.Then quickly lowered it to see their was no attackers…they all were killed as well as the survivors,I quickly scanned the room looking for the body of my friend Logan in the bloody mess with no prevail.When i looked back at my sleeping bag I saw an axe right in front of it,and I presumed they thought i was already dead with the rips in the bag and with blood cotted on it I could see why.A flash of light caught my eyes from outside the window’s and I quickly looked outside.People were screaming in fear as psychopaths were running down the streets killing anyone they came across and turning them into meat puppets.I rushed down the stairs wind at my back as I jumped over the body’s laying around,Gun bullets in there chest and axes in there head’s as I bursted out the front door.
