Okay, um, how do you even access the arcade? I start a new game, and classic and arcade mode are not lit. I load up my completed story game, and I can't get to a menu that lets me select arcade.
This game has been quite an achievement. When I first read the title, I thought, yet another zombie fighter clone of some sort, and instead what I got was this really original driving game that keeps me coming back for more. Yeah, there are lots of improvements that could be made (I think the one I would appreciate most is some sort of life and damage indicators so I knew how close to death i was), but the real important thing is that you've managed to make a game with a great story, unique gameplay, and awesome ambiance. Great work!
Actually, I believe this was stolen from a developer that seems to stay exclusively at Newgrounds by the name AssJoe (or as the credits here suggest, "Always Straight and Sober Joe"). I doubt Wristy is merely Joe's name here for several reasons. One, the name of the game is not properly attributed (Silent Hill Scape as opposed to the actual title, Silent Hill Room 304). Two none of ASSJoe's other games are posted under Wristy, but the other Wristy game has nothing to do with Joe. And, sure, it's possible that this was Joe's half ass attempt at establishing a Kong account, but even then, Developers who want people to see their work will try to keep the same or similar user names to avoid confusion and help spread their brand around. No, I'm pretty sure this was stolen.
Control scheme is all right, animation is smooth, and decent speed (or more accurately, the illusion thereof). On top of the basic suggestions you've received (opponents, finish line, music and sound effects, etc), you should also consider the following: try to provide varying properties for differing types of terrain. Leaving the track should slow down your vehicle and increase your turn radius and amount of skid and drift, ice provides for massive skid, etc. Also, while I like your acceleration and deceleration here, the car has a near impossibly small turn radius, and no drift or skid at all. The addition of an emergency brake and some standard drift and skid will provide for a more authentic feel.
Can't get past 29, any help on how to make it past the jump with the two downward facing chompers followed by the small platform with the upward facing chomper?
To be honest, Nerdook, I think you would be almost better off instead of updating this game, making a sequel. I definitely appreciate the desire to improve the game, especially one being as (deservedly) well received as this, but doing so poses a problem. Your game will be popular for only so long, and if you continue to update the old game, those new updates may not get out to people. ON the other hand, if you took the ideas you are having now, and used them to build a sequel, there's a better chance those innovations will be seen.
Question: What are the rules surrounding ability point collection? I mean, I know running races below your level will sometimes award ap, but I haven't figured out the formula if there is one.
Devaris, how you respond to the Hatter does actually have a small effect a little bit later on. Won't hurt or help you in beating the game, but it does change something in the background a little bit.
Lovely game. The only one that was even a little bit challenging, though, was the last one. Still, there's something immensely satisfying of watching the picture slide into place. If you liked this game and want something similar, I suggest coign of vantage: http://www.bobblebrook.com/games/coign-of-vantage
