One interpretation is that Looming is a metaphor for drugs. At first September tries the drug and doesn't feel too well, but after using the drug more and more September shuns January and gets terribly addicted.
In my opinion this is a badly designed platformer with a bad plot. I mean really, pale man can only fall 50 feet in one level but than in the next he jumps off a cliff and lives? Rubbish.
