It's not really "revolutionary" - having 0,0 as the top-left corner is quite standard in computing. The axes are perpendicular whether Y is up or down, so you're still using a valid cartesian coordinate system.
The difficulty isn't great. The beginning of the game comes entirely down to chance because you need to land on the right platforms and grab coins - good luck doing that when you've no idea where those things are and you have sod all fuel. Once you actually get the radar and fuel upgrades the game then becomes trivially easy.
