You don't need to pay even a cent to play, I've done just fine over the past few years. Players destroying everything is easy enough to repair from and that return time goes down to two hours if you save the fuel you earn for the book.
1. half a day wait is hyperbole, the longest manual return time without books is 4 hours. 2. fuel is not needed to build, or do anything else that is needed, send auto missions for meds if your survs are hurt that bad. 3. fuel can be looted, got in bounty boxes, and more ways that don't require spending anything
