To secure a location you must salvage all scrap and food and recruit all survivors. You don't even need to scout to perform these tasks. If you simply work to secure each location, the zombies will have little chance to overwhelm you. By securing locations, my guard duty never got above four people for normal guard duty and eight for raids, at least until I revealed the final map location. But by then you should have fifty or sixty survivors.
Pick the priest as your leader. He will save you from doing boring micromanagement healing. I defeated the final battle with an 8, 8, 7, 7, and 6. I ended days repeatedly to level my team for the fight.
MEGASPOILERS AHEAD!
First off, this game is super simple if you have patience. Do not make the error of thinking this is a game against the clock. The zombies DO NOT get stronger after so many days. What makes the zombies get stronger is having more UNSECURED locations on the map, so if you go all out scouting and trying to recruit more people but not securing any locations, then you will eventually be overwhelmed.
Atropos murdered me until I went with this combo: Plasma, Split, Splash. His health just plummets. Used antimatter bombs, which kill his bullets--especially useful when he loses his armor, so hold off using them until that time. I went with one shield and one defensive laser.
How I beat the Wandering Swordsman: Centaurion, Succubus, Witch, Goblin, Golem, Earth Dragon. Give the Golem and Earth Dragon as much damage reduction/HPs as possible. Give the Cent, Succubus and Witch as much damage increase as possible. The goblin is just to delay her. Once all units are built, give your Golems and Dragon a head start, then attack with the rest. The object is to delay her and let your ranged fighters do the damage. Build a wall with the Golem if she is about to move forward. She will slice through it fast, but you are just trying to delay her.
You know what's sick about these type of games? No, it isn't the zombies. It's the fact that every house seems to have grenades in the dresser or a Desert Eagle on the book shelf. Hey, don't forget about my flame thrower in the pantry.
How I beat the final boss:
Fully upgraded lasers and ship. Stay on the right side, just under the boss. Always go here between attacks. This is your safe area. From that position, you cannot be hit by the plasma bursts or short small shot attack/large shot attack combo. Thus you have eliminated two attacks.
The big attack goes from right to left, then back to right. If you have placed yourself correctly, you are safe from the right to left salvo. When he comes back right, wait until the shot is on your ship--not shields, but ship--then go through the boss and plant on the left side. When the attack ends move back to the right side.
Missiles, I didn't use the center strategy. I would hang out on the far left or right, halfway between the bottom and boss. The lower missiles come up at you, so when the upper missiles come close, swing around under the lower missiles and park on the opposite side halfway between the boss and bottom. Rinse and repeat.
BUGS BUGS BUGS!!! It crashed on me twice and wouldn't let me continue from a save. Also, the supervisor office tree is just a continuation of the worker office tree, but if you upgrade the office past advanced, workers can no longer be upgraded. That needs to be fixed.
BUG: If the inventory screen is open when you are on stairs and press activate, the screen messes up when you go to the next floor. When you hit the close button (though you can't see it), the screen will return to normal and put you back on the floor you just left...sometimes in the wall because it overlays the screen.
