The machine guns were actually not as effective as you would think for the continuous upgrades given. The mortars were entirely too slow (stopped using them) and by wave #9 on the last couple of levels you were really hamstrung to find a mix of weapons to combat the mass vehicles and infantry - frustrating at times.
