The key to the AI in Walkinator is simply how many iterations the computer is able to calculate in a relatively short amount of time. Basically it boils down to this: It first runs the simulation in a for loop with a predetermined number of iterations with a random set of instructions for the various muscles, it then scores the instruction set based on how far the creature got, and then generates more random instructions and scores them the same way. Essentially, the whole thing could continue randomly… It would just take a really long time for it to get any good results. This is where mutation/crossover comes in… After a certain number of random generations, it picks the top ones and mutates the instructions just a little bit to get new instructions to test. It also does a crossover operation on some instructions too(basically taking two instruction sets and splicing them together). Also, it has some other little tricks like adding a bit more randomness if it goes for awhile without finding a better solution. I think that sums it up pretty nicely… theres some good articles out there on genetic programming that go into better detail too. show less

who? Bryce or me? Because I’m not gonna even ask Bryce twice to share, but I’d be happy to help anyone once I figure it out.

And, on all the sponsorships I have so far, the terms are such that I can’t release the source. You got me thinking though, that it would be pretty cool to open source a small, unsponsored, project just to help other devs get their feet wet. No promises, but I might do something like that someday. show less
