I don't know why but regardless of the browser I use I get a blank grey'd screen that when refreshed provides a unity symbol with a full bar. but then it goes no further regardless of wait time or refreshes.
Hmm what operating system are you running, graphics card, and how much ram do you have? I know it's currently a big resource hog so that's my guess but if you let us know then we can try to reproduce on that system. Sorry about that!! i want you to be able to play!
how long is it supposed to take to load up the first time? wanna know if I need to wait or if the Now Loading screen is just gonna stay that way regardless of refreshes or coming back a few minutes latter

The initial Now Loading shouldn't take that long (That is, the first one before seeing the main menu to choose a new game). If you get there, the next "Now Loading" after starting the game, will load images, audio and several things. Since the main map is very big, it takes a bit of time but it shouldn't be terrible unless Kong serves the files slowly for whatever reason :)
