In gemcraft you get more experience for doing various things in levels
Completing it VERY fast
Early summoning all troops
and so forth, which is why people go back with epic upgrades

there is a graven flaw in the persistent upgrade thing: when you click on reset all, then everything is reset, but, as in the mine-level for instance, you are unable to pick the older upgrades again.
