Hi. I'm glad you all liked the game but it was never meant to be fast like Sonic. The running stages were actually based on Tiny Toons from SNES (Buster's ability to dash up walls)
The shooting character is inspired from Contra and Rockman while the flying character's controls is inspired from Balloon Fight (with Tail's ability to airlift buddies). Its very old school. :)
