I've been wanting to do something with Stencyl for years so i've done pretty much all of your tutorials. I still haven't made anything yet but thank you for all the work you do to help out the community, it really is appreciated.
I do have feedback for this though. I feel like the biggest thing missing from this tutorial was periodic testing of the progress. I think that seeing the progress is very important for people who are new to this. 225 slides can feel pretty daunting, so having little accomplishments is a good thing :)
Thanks for the feedback. I had not thought of doing the a mid-test in this one as I did in my 1.1 tutorial. It's a good idea to implement in the future (if there ever is a future one). If you have gone through all of the tutorials, don't forget all of my demos in the StencylForge -> Games section as well. I've mostly switched over to doing those instead as they are SO much faster to create.
For anyone who is actually serious about learning the kana, i highly recommend the book "Remembering the Kana" by James W. Heisig. I've used it, it really does work and it's far easier than brute force memorization. Methods like this game are better than nothing but if you are serious, that book will make your life a whole lot easier.
Thanks for the recommendation! Actually, the original purpose of this game was not to teach the kana, but to allow you to practice what you have learned (it should train your speed and accuracy, and allows you to know which kana you still haven't remembered). But I decided to add Adventure Mode where the kana characters are taught, to make this game accessible for people who have no prior knowledge of kana. Some people prefer learning using books, some people prefer games, some people prefer making up their own methods. Sometimes a combination of methods is used. So... yeah.
I know this game is 3 years old now but why can't i mute the audio before starting the game? And the "SPIN TIME" text is in a bad position covering up the spike balls.
Nevermind the game concept, the fact that there seems to be no option to reduce graphics quality warrants a 1/5 rating. Basic flash game principles 101!
Maybe i missed it but there really needs to be a way to lower the graphics quality. Everything went to a crawl when there were too many bullets or money on screen.
The tutorial goes on for too long. I don't need you to explain every little game detail. The fun in puzzle games is figuring things out for yourself by trial and error. You take away from that when there's blips all over that say this does this and that does that and so forth. It's good for a couple of rooms to get you started but it's really annoying now.
