After about 5 million tries, I finally beat hard mode. The key to victory: recruit new people faster than they kill you. Sounds simple, but it can be tough managing out food, living space, happiness, trying to grab defense spots, and researching. And don't rush to get a constitution drafted. I had a zombie blight on over half of my last days leading to the end.
