this is kind of like a magic wannabe except the timing rules are absolutely horrible, most of the direct damage and creature affecting spells are barely useful because they cant be cast during an opponents turn
another key on the early mining levels is to figure out the enemies attack pattern and plan your mining accordingly. For example in the first couple mining levels the waves will ONLY come from one direction, which means you can branch out through the entire asteroid field in one direction and not even worry about making it defensible.
for those having trouble with level 7, the key is to have most of your defense revolve around basic lasers, and then rotate the lasers as the enemy waves rotate around you.
Once you understand how the level works its actually quite easy, no motherships or swarmers, really missles arent even required, although they can be helpful
I love it, There is actually a use for thels and upgraded pulsars in this one for the defense levels.
In the original it was about 95% basic lasers with missles, here they mix it up more
Mothership: Your basic lasers are just going to be shields here to attract fire while your Missel launchers (or THals) take these things out. Those are the only defenses with enough range to hit.
You'll want to space missel launchers to get complete coverage of your base, since they are neccessary to defeat motherships and swarmers. I also find them very helpful against missle ships since they do high amounts of damage and can hit the ships before they fire missles. AGainst shield ships they are worthless so turn them off, I also tend to turn them off against fighters to save minerals, since they arent that effective and basic lasers are more then enough for your little red friends
Hope some of that helps
Shield ships: You'll want a lot of lasers for these guys, they much more deadly then you would think. I'd reccomend grouping your lasers in groups of 4-5 if possible. The biggest thing about these is that they are much faster then fighters so you dont have as much time to shoot them down before they get in range
Swarmers: THe deadliest wave in the game, these things are worse then motherships. Spam as many lasers as you can and hope you have enough missel launchers, since that is the only truly effective defense against swarmers. Against most other waves you should rarely lose structures unless you misallocate your defenses, but you will most definitely lose at least a handful of lasers everytime these guys show up, so be prepared to build new ones behind your current line if you are getting overwhelmed.
Enemy waves and their required basic laser density
Fighters: Not many at all, against early waves 3-4 is probably enough. Later in the game as long as you have lasers in groups of 2 you should be fine
Exploders: These on their own are actually quite harmless, the problem is they usually spawn right behind a wave of other ships. If all your guns are occupied they can be deadly. Make sure you adjust your defenses accordingly if you see them coming on top of an already existing wave
Missle Ships: You'll want a few more lasers or possibly some pulsars for these things, mostly to stop your lasers from getting hit by missles.
It can be tempting to try and build a super-laser defense system but you shouldnt need more then one or two THALS and a handful of pulsars for the entire game. Most of your defenses should be basic lasers and upgraded missle launchers
Not only are basic lasers more effective against most enemy types, they can also be recyled for 100% of their build cost. This means that you can have a sprawling base and move your lasers around as the waves spawn. Towards the end of the game the waves will often complete almost a full circle, so you'll need to have lasers everywhere, but at the beginning its often helpful to place a block of 5 or so lasers and shift it around as needed.
For those having trouble on some of the harder difficultys, stay away from THALs like they are the plague. Really the only thing they are ever needed for is if you get late into the game in some of the harder missions, you'll need a few to kill motherships when your missles stop being as effective (enemies get stronger as the game goes on, more hp/armor).
Up until that point THALs are absolutely horrible. For one thing, they require absurd amounts of energy to operate, one fully upgraded thal can singlehandidly tie up multiple generators. And if that werent bad enough, they cost 2300 mins.
Hmmm... 23 basic laser cannons, or ONE thal? Not even a choice.
very fun but it is kind of annoying how completely random the difficulty seems to be
some missions i've lost on level 1 and other ones I've beaten the enemy with 20+ fighters left, it all seems to be based around how unfair the random generation of forces is
really hope they fix the bugs in multiplayer... right now I've been sitting waiting for about 5 minutes, I was kicking this guys ass 1v1 so he left and the computer took over, and apparently it doesnt know how to move pieces and the timer wont pop up for me
extremely fun in multiplayer even if the single player and computer AI leave something to be desired.
THe cutscenes are amazing even if the story is a little confusing
My biggest beef is some connectivity problems in Multiplayer, such as chat not working, turns getting skipped due to lag, and games freezing up.
Hopefully these problems can be ironed out in the days to come
