Who thought it would be a good idea to have stages where the player has no role other than to move the camera around? Other than that it's a nice game.
I don't like the distinction between "attack" and "quick march". In order to press forward I have to keep switching between the two which is annoying. Better to have attack/neutral/defend, where "neutral" means the ghost doesn't advance and ranged units don't advance. "attack" means the ghost and all units advance.
The best place to put a "10" is in a corner, and the second-best is along an edge. Be aware of the biggest unmatched number on the board, because that is going to be the hardest to place. If you see a 9 you're going to have to either combine it with a 1 or make a 1 from subtraction. If the board has no subtraction signs and it has a 9, do not under any circumstances use up the last "1" for anything other than the 9. A similar logic applies to boards with no subtractions and other high numbers. I'm sure there's more but that's what I've figured out so far.
When an upgrade is grayed out because you can't afford it, it should still be possible to see at a glance how many times I've purchased that upgrade and how many are left.
More suggestions: (6) On the tech screen, mark the techs that allow the construction of buildings. (7) On the building screen, let me see at a glance which buildings I can't build because of tech, or production, or both. Show a progress bar of what percent of the building's production has been completed so far. (8) Show visually which food option will give me the best yield. (9) On the main screen, in the infobar, show me how many culture points I am short of the next level, not my current culture points. (What I really want to know is how many turns it will take, but maybe that's confusing because it would be inconsistent with the other infobars.) (10) Pop up a confirmation dialog when I ask to delete a saved profile.
I like this game. As others have said, it has a lot of potential. Some suggestions: (1) The notifications for new technology and new building should be harder to ignore. For new technology, go directly to the tech screen so it's impossible to ignore. (2) Would like a strategy guide or help/hints. In particular, by what year should you have achieved the various cultural levels to be "on track"? (3) Instead of making a hard cutoff of 100 turns, make the danger from barbarians increase slowly but steadily, until I either build the palace or get wiped out. (4) When I'm faced with a hurricane, I have no idea which option is best and sometimes I lose a huge percent of my population. (5) I shouldn't be able to lose 33% of my population from a random event.
Hey mattj! That's some solid advice you've made there! Well done :D
